Book Beginnings and The Friday 56: Fever

FeverBook Beginnings is hosted at A Few More Pages, and The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda’s Voice.

Today’s book is an ARC of Fever by Lauren DeStefano. This is a book I’ve been waiting several months for – as I’m sure many of you have, too. I just finished my last book and wanted to get this posted before I started reading. I suspect I won’t be doing much of anything else (if I can help it) once I crack this book open! :-)

For those who might not know, this is the second book in The Chemical Garden series, the first of which is the amazing Wither.

We run, with water in our shoes and the smell of the ocean clinging to our frozen skin.

I remember where we left off at the end of Wither, and this gets me excited. It looks like maybe we pick up where we left off? I hope so. I can’t wait to dive in – SOON!

I regretted never telling Daniel how much I liked him before that terrible night. To my credit, I was only fifteen.

My first thought was uh-oh. Wonder what happened. Then, well, yeah, how many 15-year-olds like to divulge their feelings to their crush? LOL

I turned my head again just in time to catch a glimpse of a dark, shadowy shape jumping into the half-open pantry … it looked like the tail end of a black, flowing scarf.

The light of the open sky is brilliant after the darkness of the inner rooms. I blink and hear the roar of many voices.

If you saw Third Sentence Thursday, you know what comes next. ;-)

Book Beginnings and The Friday 56: Queen by Right

Book Beginnings is hosted at A Few More Pages, and The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda’s Voice.

Today’s book is Queen by Right by Anne Easter Smith.

Queen By RightSummary:

History remembers Cecily of York standing on the steps of the Market Cross at Ludlow, facing an attacking army while holding the hands of her two young sons. Queen by Right reveals how she came to step into her destiny, beginning with her marriage to Richard, duke of York, whom she meets when she is nine and he is thirteen. Raised together in her father’s household, they become a true love match and together face personal tragedies, pivotal events of history, and deadly political intrigue. All of England knows that Richard has a clear claim to the throne, and when King Henry VI becomes unfit to rule, Cecily must put aside her hopes and fears and help her husband decide what is right for their family and their country.

I’ve been working on this book for what feels like forever now! It’s long. But quite good. I’m hoping to finish it very soon – I’m currently working on some editing, which is why I’ve been slow to read and review anything lately.

A scream pierced Cecily’s dreamless sleep. She came awake in an instant as every mother might upon hearing her child in distress.

Yep, good one. Definitely draws the reader in.

I’ve decided to have a little more fun with this one. Instead of the usual Friday 56, it’ll be the Friday -56. Meaning: 56, 156, 256, … It’s a 500-page book, so why not let you see more?

56:

Cecily knew she would find Richard either in the great hall or seeing to his horse.

156:

Knowing Richard’s anger was usually short-lived, she cocked her head, giving him a mischievous smile.

256:

“Soft, my loard,” she said sternly, frowning a reminder that they were not alone.

356:

While his brilliant blue eyes were his father’s, they did not glow with the same warmth; instead, a steely cynicism made them glitter rather than sparkle.

456:

Her heart constricted and she felt sick as she contemplated why Warwick was come in person.

Book Beginnings and The Friday 56: The Faerie Ring

Book Beginnings is hosted at A Few More Pages, and The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda’s Voice.

Today I just started an ARC The Faerie Ring by Kiki Hamilton. I’m not very far into it, but so far so good. :-)

Summary:

The Faerie RingThe year is 1871, and Tiki has been making a home for herself and her family of orphans in a deserted hideaway adjoining Charing Cross Station in central London. Their only means of survival is by picking pockets. One December night, Tiki steals a ring, and sets off a chain of events that could lead to all-out war with the Fey. For the ring belongs to Queen Victoria, and it binds the rulers of England and the realm of Faerie to peace. With the ring missing, a rebel group of faeries hopes to break the treaty with dark magic and blood—Tiki’s blood.

Unbeknownst to Tiki, she is being watched—and protected—by Rieker, a fellow thief who suspects she is involved in the disappearance of the ring. Rieker has secrets of his own, and Tiki is not all that she appears to be. Her very existence haunts Prince Leopold, the Queen’s son, who is driven to know more about the mysterious mark that encircles her wrist.

Prince, pauper, and thief—all must work together to secure the treaty…

I’m excited to be getting into this book. (And think it’s really cool to see lots of bloggers I follow with blurbs on the inside of the cover!)

“You wouldn’t be here pickin’ pockets, would you?”

Tiki jumped as the darked figure loomed over the corner where she sat, pretending to be half-asleep.

I’m always more quickly sucked in by a book that wastes no time getting to the action! ;-)

Book Beginnings and The Friday 56: Prom and Prejudice

Book Beginnings is hosted at A Few More Pages, and The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda’s Voice.

Today’s book is an e-copy of Prom and Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg. As such, I’ll pick from 56% for The Friday 56 part! ;-)

Prom and PrejudiceSummary:

After winter break, the girls at the very prestigious Longbourn Academy become obsessed with the prom. Lizzie Bennet, who attends Longbourn on a scholarship, isn’t interested in designer dresses and expensive shoes, but her best friend, Jane, might be — especially now that Charles Bingley is back from a semester in London.

Lizzie is happy about her friend’s burgeoning romance but less than impressed by Charles’s friend, Will Darcy, who’s snobby and pretentious. Darcy doesn’t seem to like Lizzie either, but she assumes it’s because her family doesn’t have money. Clearly, Will Darcy is a pompous jerk — so why does Lizzie find herself drawn to him anyway?

Will Lizzie’s pride and Will’s prejudice keep them apart? Or are they a prom couple in the making? Whatever the result, Elizabeth Eulberg, author of The Lonely Hearts Club, has concocted a very funny, completely stylish delight for any season — prom or otherwise.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single girl of high standing at Longbourn Academy must be in want of a prom date.

This is all it takes for the reader to know that this story is very much based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice!
