Review: Lone Wolf

Lone WolfLone Wolf by Jodi Picoult

Summary: Edward Warren, twenty-four, has been living in Thailand for five years, a prodigal son who left his family after an irreparable fight with his father, Luke. But he gets a frantic phone call: His dad lies comatose, gravely injured in the same accident that has also injured his younger sister Cara.

With her father’s chances for recovery dwindling, Cara wants to wait for a miracle. But Edward wants to terminate life support and donate his father’s organs. Is he motivated by altruism, or revenge? And to what lengths will his sister go to stop him from making an irrevocable decision?

Lone Wolf explores the notion of family, and the love, protection and strength it’s meant to offer. But what if the hope that should sustain it, is the very thing that pulls it apart?

My Thoughts: Jodi Picoult does it again. Yes, we have another courtroom drama. Yes, we have another book filled with alternating points of view. Yes, we have a gasp-provoking bomb dropped at the end (but this time not at court). But, damn, is it good! Sure, Picoult’s books seem to pretty much follow the same formula: Dive into the crisis; introduce characters and throw in details pertaining to said crisis; someone decides it’s a matter to be solved in court; courtroom drama; out-of-court drama strewn throughout during trial; trial ends; small bits of the aftermath; epilogue with just enough to know what the long-term effects of said trial are. Oh, and don’t forget the bomb dropped toward the end – usually in court (again, not this time). Sure, that appears to be her formula, and I know some people are down on her for that. But I say so what. I mean really. It works, and every stinking time, it’s a page-turner. Even when I’m not blown away, I can’t seem to stop reading. Picoult weaves intricate tales that are bound to captivate her readers’ imaginations. And this time? There are wolves. Pretty damn cool.

So, let’s talk about the wolves. Those are some interesting – very interesting – parts. Luke spends time living in the wild with a pack of wolves. And they accept him into the pack. He goes against any human instincts he has and allows them to rough him up to show that he’s trustworthy (to them). The rational side of me wants to scoff and say that’s a bunch of hogwash, but I know it’s not. You see, Picoult’s acknowledgments are at the beginning, and she thanks a man named Shaun Ellis. He is a real person who has done many of the things attributed to Luke. Pretty wild. Those are quite possibly my favorite parts of the book.

I found myself pulling for Cara, and feeling some of her anger toward Edward. I think he does his best to try to work things out, but his abandonment of the family isn’t something that can be easily forgotten – which he seems to try to do. “Sure, I’ve been gone – practically dead to the family – for six years, but I’m ready to swoop in and make impossible decisions. Oh, and I’m going to presume to know better than Cara, who has been living with my father for the past four years, what he might or might not want.” I’d be pissed if I was Cara, too. Poor Cara. When I read her gasp-worth revelation I really feel for her. It’s not the same kind of gasp-worthy moment as we’ve seen in other Picoult books, but it’s still quite weighty.

If you’re a fan of Jodi Picoult, you’ll enjoy Lone Wolf. I highly recommend it!

Book Blogger Hop: Crazy Book Titles

Book Blogger Hop

It’s time to hop on through the book-blogging world. I know I don’t do this every week, but that’s usually for lack of time – or not feeling like I have a good answer to the question. But this week’s question is awesome. I have two (related) books to share!

Let’s talk crazy book titles! Highlight one or two (or as many as you like!) titles in your personal collection that have the most interesting titles! If you can’t find any, feel free to find one on the internet!

Oh, wait, I just looked on Goodreads, and there are FOUR (related) books I can share. I’ve only read two of them, but will definitely read the others! All of these titles are part of the Real Life series, and are by Nancy Rue.

Motorcycles, Sushi & One Strange BookMotorcycles, Sushi & One Strange Book:

Fifteen-year-old Jessie Hatcher can no longer use bubbly charm to cover up her problems, and when her biological father appears from nowhere and takes her from her suburban home in Birmingham, Alabama, to his home in Maine, Jessie finds she needs the help of a mysterious book to get her life back together.

That description doesn’t do the book justice. I really liked it a lot. You can find my review HERE.

Boyfriends, Burritos & an Ocean of TroubleBoyfriends, Burritos & an Ocean of Trouble:

Bryn O’Connor is good at keeping secrets. But when a car accident reveals her boyfriend’s abusive behavior, the truth is unleashed. And it starts a tidal wave of trouble in Bryn’s life: enemies who were once friends, a restraining order violation, and her world unraveled. If that weren’t enough, her grandmother Mim arrives, attempting Mexican cuisine and insisting that Bryn try surfing. It’s all too much! Even Bryn’s habit of daydreaming won’t offer an escape this time. But could a mysterious book she found hold the secret to riding a tsunami like her life?

Again, the description is OK, but the book was great! My review is HERE.

Tournaments, Cocoa & One Wrong MoveTournaments, Cocoa & One Wrong Move:

Tournaments, Cocoa & One Wrong Move, the third book of author Nancy Rue’s Real Life series for teen girls, follows Cassidy Brewster, a driven athlete who will do anything to stay on top. After an injury, and a subsequent mistake that could ruin her athletic career, she finds support in the most unlikely places—including a room filled with juvenile delinquents and the pages of an old book labeled “RL.”

I have not yet read this one, but I definitely want to at some point.

Limos, Lattes & My Life on the FringeLimos, Lattes & My Life on the Fringe:

Outcast? Tyler Bonning is used to life on the outskirts and believes she’s beyond caring what others, like the popular and wealthy Ruling Class, think of her. Until she’s nominated for prom queen as a joke. Unexpectedly hurt, Tyler decides to turn her nomination into a cause and starts a Prom for Everyone campaign that will help make the event affordable. But just as her cause gains momentum, opposition at school and at home forces Tyler to question not only the campaign, but also the way she’s perceived by others. As prom approaches, Tyler faces her biggest challenge yet—one her brains alone won’t be able to solve. A perplexing leather book might hold the answers, but is Tyler willing to listen?

Haven’t read this one, either. But, hopefully I’ll get to sometime soon.

This Week’s Question: How many books are currently in your To-Be-Read (TBR) Pile?

My Answer: Oh, what a loaded question …

The official number, at least according to my TBR “shelf” on Goodreads, is 360. But it’s definitely more. I don’t always remember to add books to my list on Goodreads! Plus, I typically forget to add review books to Goodreads until I’ve read them. I currently have about 60 books on my review schedule (for the rest of the year), and it’s safe to say that most of them aren’t on Goodreads. So, I’m guessing here my actual TBR list is closer to 500 books – and growing all the time!

This Week’s Question: Which book blogger would you most like to meet in real life?

My Answer: This is a really tough question for me. I could tell you who of everyone I know online I’d like to meet in real life, but she’s not a book blogger. I have so many favorite book bloggers that picking one just seems unfair. Off the top of my head:

  • Tiger at All-Consuming Books ~ We were paired up (can’t remember by whom anymore) as “book blog buddies” and I’m glad we were. I have followed her blog ever since, and really enjoyed her reviews (and other posts). I think meeting IRL would be fun!
  • Jen at Crazy for Books ~ And not just because she’s the host of this hop! I work with her on her Crazy Book Tours site to help with organization, and she’s a wonderful person.
  • Namine at Books I’ve Read ~ I’ve been having an on-again, off-again conversation with her since shortly after I started book blogging. She’s a sweetie, and one of those people who always make me smile.

OK, I’m stopping at three simply because I need to get some sleep. (And because three is my lucky number.) If you’re a bloggy friend of mine and don’t see yourself on here, PLEASE don’t think it means anything. It’s impossible to list everyone, and if I made this same list a month ago or even a week from now, it’d likely be different!

This Week’s Question: “Outside of books, what is your guilty pleasure?”

My Answer: I try to avoid guilty pleasures, as how pleasurable are they if I feel guilty about them? But, there are some things I sheepishly admit to enjoying. I love video games. When I slack off with my reading and/or blogging, it’s likely because I got sucked into a video game. Either Animal Crossing on the Wii, The Sims 3 on my computer, or any number of other games … they suck me in very quickly, very easily. I have always loved them, though – when I was a kid I was a pro at Mario Brothers (the original one). I spent way too much time on the Nintendo! LOL

This Week’s Question: “Do you read only one book at a time, or do you have several going at once?”

My Answer: I prefer to read one book at a time, but lately that hasn’t worked out too well. At the most, I’ll have two going simultaneously – but they have to be very different. Like, right now I’m reading fiction and non-fiction. There’s no getting those confused in my head.

Book Blogger Hop: February 25-28

Yet another thing I’ve all but forgotten over the past several months. It’s so nice to get back into the swing of things!

This Week’s Question: “Do you ever wish you would have named your blog something different?”

My Answer: Not really. It fits. I’m a book nerd. Love to read, have a degree in English. I’m all about grammar, and even enjoy editing. (Yes, I said enjoy editing.) I can’t remember exactly how I finally ended up with Proud Book Nerd. What I do remember is that a little less than a year ago I decided to break my book reviews off into a new blog, rather than put it on my personal blog. I was on Blogger at the time, and tried several different things, and proudbooknerd was what was available. It worked, and when I decided to get my own domain, it just made sense to stick with it! :-)
