Once Upon a Read-a-Thon: Wrapping It Up

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon
It’s hard to believe that Once Upon a Read-a-Thon is over already! It flew by this year, and I had a blast reading. I met my goals, and I even got a little more done than I’d hoped. I’m very pleased. Oh, and last night, I was able to get about 50 more pages read before midnight, so my total for yesterday was a smidgeon bigger. This was a blast, and I promise to post the reviews from what I read as soon as I’m able.

Day 1 Summary:

Day 2 Summary:

  • Read Stork by Wendy Delsol (357 pages)
  • Read 98 pages in The Awakening by L. J. Smith
  • Completed 2 of 2 mini-challenges
  • Total pages read today: 455

Day 3 Summary:

  • Finished The Awakening by L. J. Smith (154 pages)
  • Read 84 pages in Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott
  • Participated in 1 of 2 mini-challenges
  • Total pages read today: 238

Final Totals:

  • Books read: 3 full and portions of two others
  • Challenges completed: 5 of 6
  • Pages read: 1,104

Wow. I knocked any expectations I had out of the park! I’m very happy with my progress.

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon: Day 3

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon
Today is the last day of this year’s Once Upon a Read-a-Thon. It’s bittersweet. Unlike last year, I’m not ready to say, “good riddance!” But, I am kinda ready to get on with my usual normal daily life! With that said, I’m quite happy with my progress thus far.

Yesterday’s Summary:

  • Read Stork by Wendy Delsol (357 pages)
  • Read 98 pages in The Awakening by L. J. Smith
  • Completed 2 of 2 mini-challenges
  • Total pages read today: 455
  • Total pages read so far during read-a-thon: 866

Today’s Goals:

  • Finish The Awakening by L. J. Smith
  • Start (and maybe finish) Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott

In case you missed last night’s update, I have family coming in from out of town today. So, I’m not sure how much reading I’ll be able to do. But, I’ll be happy if I can at least finish The Awakening. On the bright (in a twisted way) side, the damn dog woke me up before 6, so I’m getting an extra early start today! And, with that said, it’s time to get back into reading.

  • 7 a.m. ~ on page 99 in The Awakening by L. J. Smith

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FIRST UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Break time!

  • 11:40 a.m. ~ Finished The Awakening (154 pages)
  • 12:30 p.m. ~ Starting Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott

I don’t think I’ll get very far today, as our company is heading our way. But, I’ll see what I can read. For now, I’ll get the challenges done.

Challenge:

The first I’m doing is hosted at Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing. What Ashley wants is book recommendations. More specifically, she wants one to be any book, and the second to be the favorite from the Read-a-Thon. So, here I go.

  • Out of all books ever, I would choose Every Last One by Anna Quindlen. This is an amazing, amazing book. To this day, I can’t think about it without getting sad. Quindlen does an amazing job of portraying grief, and it totally blindsides the reader. At least it did me. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, one of the best-written books ever!
  • From read-a-thon books, I think I’d choose Stork by Wendy Delsol. It’s so original, imaginative, and unique. I really enjoyed the use of Norse (I think it was) mythology (you know, Odin and such), and I just loved how the story worked together. Kat is a very likable and witty character. I had a lot of fun reading it.

And there you go, the first one done. I don’t think I’m going to get the second one done, because I just don’t have time. Plus, it’s playing matchmaker between books. I’m not sure I can do that off the top of my head like this. Anyway, my company should be here kinda soon, but I’m hoping to get a bit more reading in before they arrive. I’ll post one more update at some point today. My wrap-up post likely will come sometime after company leaves – either late tomorrow or sometime on Friday. Now to get the kids some lunch and get my nose back into a book! ;)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FINAL UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Well, I have to call it a read-a-thon, as our company is here, and we’re enjoying their company. So, no more updates – or reading – for me.

  • 8:21 p.m. ~ On page 38 of Between Here and Forever

I have elected not to participate in the second challenge, for lack of time. I have been having a blast, and am a little sad to be wrapping it up a few hours early, but I must.

Summary for Day 3:

  • Finished The Awakening by L. J. Smith (154 pages)
  • Read 37 pages in Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott
  • Participated in 1 of 2 mini-challenges
  • Total pages read today: 191
  • Total pages read during read-a-thon: 1057

I am quite happy with my final numbers, but a bit curious about how high they’d be if I’d been able to read more today. But, that’s OK. I did good – and I passed my goals. So, I’m thrilled. More thoughts to come when I post my wrap-up post – which will probably be over the weekend.

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon: Day 2

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

Yesterday was a great day for my reading, and hopefully today will be more of the same. Well, not the same in that I want to read the same thing – the same in that I get a lot accomplished! ;)

Yesterday’s Summary:

  • Finished Tales from the Edge of Forever by Alexander Hammond (118 pages)
  • Read Someone to Watch Over Me by Michelle Stimpson (293 pages)
  • Completed 2 of 2 mini-challenges
  • Total pages read: 411

Today’s Goals:

  • Read Stork by Wendy Delsol
  • Start The Awakening by L. J. Smith (assuming it arrives early enough)
  • If The Awakening isn’t here on time, start Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott (or start this after finishing The Awakening – we’ll see)

And, of course, I’ll participate in the mini-challenges when I need a break. So, it’s time to feed the kids their breakfast, then get going on the reading! I’ll talk to you soon, I’m sure!

  • 8:38 a.m. ~ Starting Stork by Wendy Delsol

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FIRST UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Things are going a bit more slowly today, unfortunately. I was hoping to be farther into Stork by now, if not completely done with it. Apparently, my kids want attention from their mother! ;-) On the bright side, The Awakening by L. J. Smith has arrived, so that’s what I’ll be reading next.

  • 2:48 p.m. ~ on page 129 of Stork

Challenge:

The first challenge is hosted by YA Bliss. Sabrina would like for participants to share their three favorite love triangles. This is another tough choice, but here we go. (These are in no order other than that in which I think of them.)

  • Oscar vs. Randall in the Everlasting series by Angie Frazier ~ all through the first book, I was 100% behind Oscar. After reading the second, I’m torn. They’re both great guys, and the more Randall made himself known, the less sure I became of Oscar.
  • Ren vs. Shay in the Nightshade series by Andrea Cremer
  • Will vs. Jem in The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare ~ It has been almost a year since I read Clockwork Angel, but I still remember the book quite well. I remember thinking Will was absolutely awesome – he’s so witty that I just love his personality – but clearly, Jem is pretty darn awesome, too – despite being ill. I was strongly leaning toward Will, but I remember the end of the book enough to know that there is some cause to doubt him. I could see myself leaning the other way at some points, depending on what is happening.

And now I must get back into – and hopefully finish – Stork, which I must say I’m really enjoying. I’ll update next time I need a sanity break! ;-)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ SECOND UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I just finished Stork, which was quite good, and thought I’d take a break for a quick update, and to check out the second mini-challenge.

  • 9:13 p.m. ~ Finished Stork by Wendy Delsol (357 pages)
  • 9:40 p.m. ~ Starting The Awakening by L. J. Smith

Challenge:

This is a fun one, hosted at The Bookish Type. Take the cover of one of the Read-a-Thon books I’m reading, and write a synopsis based on that. No worries about whether it fits the actual book! :-) I’m not usually very creative, but I’ll give it a try. I’m using Stork, because it’s the best cover for this type of thing out of what I’m reading for this challenge. Unfortunately, because of what’s on the cover, it won’t stray too far from the actual book, but I’m trying!

Stormy was given her name because she was born during the biggest snowstorm of the century. Amazingly, she looks like she came from the snow with a super pale skin tone and white-blond hair. Her icy blue eyes seal the deal. As she grows from childhood into adolescence, she discovers that she has the ability to manipulate wintry weather. These newly discovered skills help her discover mysterious parts of her family’s history, which before now had been forgotten – except by her “crazy” Aunt Linda. Lindy helps Stormy learn to hone her powers, and just in time, too. The biggest winter storm ever is headed her way, and only she can save her friends, her family, and her boyfriend – or can she? And even more importantly, what’s the cause behind this storm? Is it merely natural weather patterns, or some force trying to stop her from becoming the Snow Queen?

OK, that’s horrible, but you were warned! It’s hard not to make it took close to the book, when I just finished it! ;-) And now I head back to the couch to get started on the next book! Look for one more update in a couple of hours.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FINAL UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I am done for the day and quite happy with my progress. :-) I’m not sure how tomorrow will go, as I have company coming in from out of town, but I’ll read what I can before they arrive.

Summary for Day 2:

  • Read Stork by Wendy Delsol (357 pages)
  • Read 98 pages in The Awakening by L. J. Smith
  • Completed 2 of 2 mini-challenges
  • Total pages read today: 455
  • Total pages read so far during read-a-thon: 866

Tomorrow’s Goals:

  • Finish The Awakening by L. J. Smith
  • Start (and maybe finish) Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott

And that’s it for today. Tomorrow I will see what I can do. I’m hoping to get to at least a total of 950 – 1,000 pages being my ultimate goal. If I wasn’t expecting company, I feel safe saying it’d be quite easy to make the latter. But, with tomorrow being a day with company, I will be happy with the former. I am pretty confident in my ability to do it. The absolute bare minimum for me to be happy and feel like I accomplished something would be 984, one page more than last year’s read-a-thon! ;-) We shall see! Until then, have a great night, everyone!

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon: Day 1

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

And we’re off!

Sorta. The kiddos aren’t cooperative – that does not bode well for the next two days. But, I’ll do my best to read what I can.

For the next few days, I’ll be reading as much as possible for this read-a-thon. So I don’t expect to have much of an online presence. No Teaser Tuesday, no other reviews, not much of anything. I’ll post reviews and such when it’s over. I will update this post throughout the day as I need a break, and to participate in the challenges.

  • 9:03 a.m. ~ On page 45 in Tales from the Edge of Forever by Alexander Hammond

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FIRST UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shortly after I first posted this, we lost power! That derailed some of my reading, and created a small bit of excitement with the littles. LOL I’m taking a short break for my own sanity, to report on my progress, and to participate in a challenge. So, without further ado …

  • 2:21 p.m. ~ Finished Tales from the Edge of Forever by Alexander Hammond (118 pages)
  • 235 p.m. ~ Starting Someone to Watch Over Me by Michelle Stimpson

Challenge:

Hosted at IB Book Blogging, the first challenge is in regards to mythology, which is a big theme in YA lately. Bailey asks two questions, which I will answer below.

1. What is your favorite type of myth (Greek, Roman, Egyptian etc)? Well, Greek and Romany mythology are almost the same. The stories and gods/goddesses are the same people with different names. The stories, from my recollection, are pretty much the same, too. There might be small differences, but I don’t think they’re all that different. I know very little about Egyptian, Native American, and other mythologies. So, of what I do know, I’d pick Greek as my favorite. For one, I prefer their names to the ones the Romans used: Zeus, Hades, Aphrodite, Athena, etc. For another, they’re the originals (at least when compared to the Romans), so I might as well go with them! ;-)

2. What is your favorite book with some type of mythology in it? I haven’t read a bunch, but this year I have read two of them: Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton and Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. Both were VERY good, but if I had to pick a favorite I think it’d be Starcrossed.

And now I must get back to reading! Thanks for keeping me company! I’ll check in again soon!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ SECOND UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Taking a break from reading for my own sanity. My head is full, and it’s time to check the mail anyway. ;-) Plus, there’s another challenge to take a look at.

  • 5:45 p.m. ~ on page 114 of Someone to Watch Over Me by Michelle Stimpson

OK, that was an on-blog challenge, but it was a LOT of fun. If you’re playing along – or want to (it’s not too late to join in) – you can find the challenge HERE. And not to get back to reading. I’m hoping to finish Someone to Watch Over Me tonight.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FINAL UPDATE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And I am done for the day. Things went better than I’d expected! :-) I actually just finished (around 11:45 p.m.) Someone to Watch Over Me. Very good – look for my review when this is all finished. I was going to read The Awakening next, but it doesn’t get here until tomorrow (thanks to Amazon), so I’ll read Stork tomorrow.

Today’s Final Summary:

  • Finished Tales from the Edge of Forever by Alexander Hammond (118 pages)
  • Read Someone to Watch Over Me by Michelle Stimpson (293 pages)
  • Completed 2 of 2 mini-challenges
  • Total pages read today: 411

Tomorrow’s Goals:

  • Read Stork by Wendy Delsol
  • Start The Awakening by L. J. Smith (assuming it arrives early enough)
  • If The Awakening isn’t here on time, start Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott (or start this after finishing The Awakening – we’ll see)

And with that said, I’m done for today. I feel like I got a lot accomplished! :) I’ll see you tomorrow with the new stats.

It’s Almost Time for Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon
I got an e-mail in my inbox the other day reminding me of this wonderful event! I participated last year and really loved it, so figured I’d do it again. Fortunately, we’re supposed to have a rainy week, so I should be able to read a lot. Well, provided the kiddos allow! ;-) Last year I finished 3 books, and read over 900 pages. I’m going to try to read at least that much, if not more, this time around. The books I’m hoping to read:

  1. Finish Tales from the Edge of Forever by Alexander Hammond
  2. Someone to Watch Over Me by Michelle Stimpson
  3. The Awakening by L. J. Smith
  4. Stork by Wendy Delsol

We’ll see if I’m able to get this much read, though. I’m not staying up all hours of the night tonight to get started at midnight. I need my sleep. (Especially now, as I’ve been sleeping horribly the last week or so!) But, I’ll start reading in the morning and hopefully get on a roll!

I will not be posting reviews of anything I read during this time, in order to spend more time reading. So, look for the reviews in the later part of the week and/or over the weekend!

Are you participating? It’s not too late to sign up! Just click on the button above to get to the sign-up post! :)

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

It’s time to sign up for the Once Upon a Read-a-Thon for this July. I did it last year, and really enjoyed it. It’s ideal for me simply because it is during the summer, a time when the kids are out of school and things are calmer in general (most of the time). Hopefully I’ll be able to use this time to get myself ahead on my review reading, and squeeze in some leisure reading, too! That would be AWESOME! ;-)

From one of the host blogs:

What is a Readathon?

A Readathon is where you set a goal for yourself to read more books that is beyond your average number of books you read. There is no minimum, it’s all up to you! Push yourself to get some of those books read that have been sitting on your shelves for awhile!  You can read any type of book you choose!

What you do:

To participate in the Once Upon a Readathon you fill out the form below, which is to enter you for the prizes, and enter into the linky so we can visit you! The form and linky is the same on all of our blogs so you only need to enter once!  Then, from 12:01 am on July 11th to 11:59 pm on July 13th you read, read, and read some more! Make sure you do at least one update post (if you don’t have a blog you may do this on facebook and/or twitter) and participate in at least one challenge. Don’t forget to add the button to your sidebar!!

Apparently there will be prizes and stuff, too. So, go check it out! (You can sign up at the post linked above.)

48 Hour TBR Read-a-Thon: Saturday

It is time for an update. I have got to say, I don’t know WHAT I was thinking. EIGHT books? I blame my kids! LMAO Anyway, I’ve decided to make my goal a little more realistic. Instead of the EIGHT books I had listed, I’ll plan to read the first four, namely:

  1. Manifest
  2. Blind Hope
  3. Good-bye to All That
  4. Katy’s Debate

I will also hope to read – or at least begin – the next two on my list:

  1. Final Touch
  2. The Julian Game

That will make me happy. ;-) That said, I’ve already finished two, and that’s why it’s time for an update. Progress:

  • Read Manifest last night. (248 pages)
  • Read Blind Hope today. (208 pages)
  • Total pages so far: 456

What’s next?

  • Shower, then lunch and maybe some housework
  • Read Good-bye to All That

This is the only post related to the read-a-thon for today. So, when I take a break to update, I’ll do so right here! :-)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~UPDATE~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And now for my update. I don’t really have much to say. If you’re wondering why, read my latest post. I spent most of the day after my shower catching up on my TV shows. I know, pathetic, but I just needed to veg. My husband took the kids away this weekend so I could relax, rejuvenate, and get some things done. Reading wasn’t really one of those things. I have started Good-bye to All That, but not gotten very far at all. I’ll get it done tomorrow, then it’s time to work on the house, something I’ve been really wanting to do (without half-pints under foot) for a while.
