Reading Challenge: Free Reads 2012

Free Reads
Hosted by Bookish Ardour, the Free Reads challenge is one I can’t pass up. This is a challenge to help get us reading books we’ve received for free – via giveaways, as gifts, ARCs/books for the purpose of review, etc. I have tons of these sitting around – many of which I’ve been really wanting to read but haven’t taken the time for them. Hopefully this challenge will help me MAKE time! Plus, reviews are optional, which I greatly appreciate. While I usually try to review what I read, there are times I just don’t feel like writing a review. So, I generally try to take the opportunity to NOT review something when it’s just being read for fun.

Rules:

  • The Main Rule: Read books you’ve received without purchasing, gifts, ARCs, prizes (not library books), that you haven’t read yet.
  • Running Dates: 1st of January – 31st of December 2012
  • When Can I Sign Up: All the way up to the last two weeks of December!
  • Crossover Genres: Anything! As long as they were free when you got them, it doesn’t matter..
  • Mr Linky: To use the Mr Linky you’ll need to click on the graphic then enter your link. These will be updated and posted into this page every couple of weeks or so.
  • Further Details: Crossover challenges are fine, you can change levels at any time, this is eBook, short story, and graphic novel friendly, and you don’t need a blog to join in (read further for details).

There is a lot more information about rules, reviews, etc. Click on the button at the top of this post to get to the post with all of the details.

Levels:

  1. For Me? – Choose 5 books to read
  2. On The Cheap – Choose 15 books to read
  3. Bargain – Choose 30 books to read
  4. Presents – Choose 50 books to read
  5. So Free – Choose 75 books to read
  6. Gift Addict – Choose between 76-135 books to read
  7. Speechless – Choose between 136-200 books to read

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to aim LOW. I barely had any chances to read books that didn’t have specific review dates scheduled this year, and next year might not be much better. So, I’m gonna shoot for For Me?. If I make it, I just might bump it up to the next level. (I’m kinda hoping I’ll be able to!) Here’s a preliminary list of books I really hope I get read for this:

  1. I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder ~ Received as a RAK gift
  2. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa ~ won in a giveaway
  3. Divergent by Veronica Roth ~ won in a giveaway
  4. Never Have I Ever (second book in The Lying Game series) ~ won in a giveaway
  5. Spin the Plate by Donna Anastasi ~ sent by the author a long, long time ago

Of course, this might not be the books I end up reading for this challenge, but that’s what I’d read if I started today and read all five in a row (not necessarily in that order). Wow, what a run-on …

If I get these (or 5 others) done, I’ll add to the list and shoot for 15. Wish me luck!

Update 2/5

Well, I have already somehow managed to make it past 5 books for this challenge. So, I guess I’ll up the ante. So, now my goal is 15 – On the Cheap. :-) Once again, if I make it that high early enough, I’ll adjust my goal accordingly!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Update 3/10

Amazingly, I have reached 15 already! So, I guess we’ll be bumping it up to Bargain – 30 books!

Speculative Fiction Challenge 2012

Speculative Fiction Challenge 2012

Oh, yes, another challenge. I’m not sure if I’ll regret so many challenges later, but we’ll see. Some of these are things I think just in my day-to-day reading/reviewing I’ll be able to do – and still challenge myself to do it a bit more. This one is no different. As you likely know by now, fantasy is one of my favorite genres. Not so much on the sci-fi, but since this challenge includes all kinds of fantasy – and dystopian – I think I’ll be OK. This is hosted by BaffledBooks.

The deets:

Anyone can join, blog or not, you just need somewhere to post your reviews to share with the world. If you have a blog, a post about the challenge would be nice! Just add your details to the linky below to sign up.

Timeline: 01 Jan 2012 – 31 Dec 2012. You can sign up from now right up until 31 Nov 2012.

Rules: The levels are back this year! Just pick your level and declare it in your post or in the comments below:

  • Nosey: 3 novels
  • Excited: 6 novels
  • Content: 12 novels
  • In Nirvana: 24 novels
  • Obsessed: 48 novels

There is no need to list your books now (unless you are like me and love making lists), just pick as you go along and have fun! Books can most definitely be counted towards other challenges.

I will post a monthly link up for you to share your reviews. There are no prizes other that a sense of satisfaction at reaching your goal (*interpretation* We are broke college students with no sneakily awesome publishing contacts).

Any book format (ebook, print, audio) counts!

Genres:

  • Science Fiction: hard/soft SF, cyberpunk, time travel, alternative history, space opera
  • Fantasy Fiction: dark fantasy, urban fantasy, magic realism, quest, mythical fantasy, steampunk
  • Horror Fiction: paranormal, gothic literature, splatterpunk
  • Supernatural Fiction
  • Superhero Fiction
  • Utopian and Dystopian Fiction
  • Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction

I think I’ll shoot for Content. If I find it’s easier than expected, I’ll up the ante at some point.

Update 3/2

Apparently I read more Speculative Fiction than I’d realized. I reached my goal in February, but just now realized it. LOL So, I’m upping the ante. Gonna shoot to make it to In Nirvana (24) now.

2012 Sensational Seconds Challenge

The 2012 Sensational Seconds Challenge is hosted by Jessi at Reading in the Corner. The point is to focus on YA and MG sequels/companion novels published during the year 2012. Jessi even made a Goodreads list to help keep track of what books count.

The Rules:

  • The goal of the SSC will be to read sequels/companion novels! *duh* There are four different levels that you can choose to participate at:
    • Level 1 (Beginner): 1-4 books
    • Level 2 (Intermediate): 5-8 books
    • Level 3 (Advanced): 8-12 books
    • Level 4 (Crazy): 13+ books
  • Anyone can join! You don’t have to be a blogger specifically, but you do need to review the sequels that you read somewhere (such as Goodreads, LibraryThing, Shelfari, etc.) in English
  • There will occasionally be giveaways! (Still TBD…but they’ll be for participants only)
  • You can join anytime! Just set your goal and get started!

For the full information, check out the post HERE.

Based on the number of books from that list that I plan to read (all of which I am DEFINITELY eagerly anticipating), I’m shooting for Level 4 (Crazy)! Wish me luck.

Redwall Reading Challenge

Oh, yes, another one! I’m going to try to get my challenge sign-up posts done in the next few days so I can stop trying to remember! LMAO Anyway …

Redwall Reading Challenge
This one is to motivate me to finish the Redwall series. I read the first nine books in the series several years ago, and just kinda stopped. Not sure why – maybe I needed a change. Anyway, I want to read the whole thing. (I hate leaving series unfinished, especially well-written ones like this!) So, yes, I will reread the first nine before continuing the series. (It’s been so long since I’ve read them I hardly remember them at all.) The info from the host, Book Dragon’s Lair:

What: Read all the books in the Redwall series

When: January 1, 2012 on…. finish when you finish

I am going to base my reading order on what is on FictFact.com:

  1. Redwall
  2. Mossflower
  3. Mattimeo
  4. Mariel of Redwall
  5. Salamandastron
  6. Martin the Warrior
  7. The Bellmaker
  8. Outcast of Redwall
  9. The Pearls of Lutra
  10. The Long Patrol
  11. Marlfox
  12. The Legend of Luke
  13. Lord Brocktree
  14. The Taggerung
  15. Triss
  16. Loamhedge
  17. Rakkety Tam
  18. High Rhulain
  19. Eulalia!
  20. Doomwyte
  21. The Sable Queen
  22. The Rogue Crew

Man, that’s a lot of books. Good thing there’s plenty of time to read them! ;-)

Reading Challenge: Off the Shelf 2012

Off the Shelf 2012
Hosted by Bookish Ardour, the Off the Shelf challenge is one I can’t pass up. The main goal is to get books that are already on your shelves (or already on your e-reader) READ. So, all books you OWN that were acquired prior to January 1, 2012 qualify. I have so, so many books sitting around hoping I’ll have time for them. Hopefully this challenge will help me MAKE time! ;-) Plus, reviews are optional, which I greatly appreciate. While I usually try to review what I read, there are times I just don’t feel like writing a review. So, I generally try to take the opportunity to NOT review something when it’s just being read for fun.

Rules:

  • The Main Rule: Do not include books acquired during 2012, it defeats the purpose, read those books from before 2012 started!
  • Running Dates: 1st of January – 31st of December 2012
  • When Can I Sign Up: All the way up to the last two weeks of December!
  • Crossover Genres: Anything! The name of the game is to turn those unread books into read ones.
  • Further Details: Crossover challenges are fine, you can change levels at any time, this is eBook, short story, and graphic novel friendly, and you don’t need a blog to join in.

There is a lot more information about rules, reviews, etc. Click on the button at the top of this post to get to the post with all of the details.

Levels:

  1. Tempted– Choose 5 books to read
  2. Trying – Choose 15 books to read
  3. Making A Dint – Choose 30 books to read
  4. On A Roll – Choose 50 books to read
  5. Flying Off – Choose 75 books to read
  6. Hoarder – Choose between 76-135 books to read
  7. Buried – Choose between 136-200 books to read

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to aim LOW. I barely had any chances to read books off my shelves this year, and next year might not be much better. So, I’m gonna shoot for Tempted. If I make it, I just might bump it up to the next level. (I’m kinda hoping I’ll be able to!) Here’s a preliminary list of books I really hope I get read for this:

  • Twilight
  • New Moon
  • Eclipse
  • Breaking Dawn
  • The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

How nice that all of the Twilight books work for this! LOL If I get these done, I’ll add to the list and shoot for 15. Wish me luck!

For full details on this challenge, or to sign up, check out the page HERE.

Update 2/13

Miracle of miracles! I have reached 5 books! And it’s only February. I guess that means I should reach a little higher. So, now I’ll shoot for Trying (15). Hopefully I’ll find the next 10 just as easy to get through! ;-)

2012 Support Your Local Library Challenge

Oh, yes, another challenge. ;-) Look for a bunch of these posts at this time, because I’m planning ahead. I found I was able to meet most of my challenges, but fell a bit short on the ones that didn’t allow for my reviewing schedule. I think that means I need to cut back on the reviewing. Anyway, this challenge is the 2012 Support Your Local Library Challenge hosted by The Eclectic Bookshelf. It runs from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012 – and it’s a Leap Year, so we get an extra day to do it!

Support Your Local Library

Here are the rules:

  • Anyone can join.
  • You don’t need a blog to participate.  If you are a Non-blogger please leave a comment with a link (if you review elsewhere) to your review or with the book(s) you read.
  • Audio, ebooks (some libraries allow ebooks to be checked out), bound books are ok.
  • No re-reads
  • Create a sign up post and post the link in the linky.
  • Challenge goes from January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012

Levels:

Level 1 – Read 12 library books
Level 2 – Read 24 library books
Level 3 – Read 36 library books
Level 4 – Read 37+ library books

I will aim for Level 1. While I’d love to get more library books, I think getting them read isn’t going to be as easy as I’d like. You know, the whole time thing … If I find I’m reading library books at a faster pace than I expect, I’ll amend my goals.

E-Book Reading Challenge

I know, I know, 2011 is still in full swing. Still, it’s time to prepare for 2012. With that, at least here on the blog, comes things like planning tours, reviews, interviews, etc. And reading challenges.

In anticipation of this, I have created a Reading Challenges page, because I felt my sidebar was just getting TOO cluttered. All updates and such (starting with the 2012 challenges) will be made there. For now, the 2011 challenges (and corresponding buttons) are there. Challenges for 2012 will be added as I add them to my goals for next year.

And with that said, I’m announcing my first challenge: 2012 E-Book Reading Challenge hosted by The Eclectic Bookshelf. It runs from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012 – and it’s a Leap Year, so we get an extra day to do it! ;-)

2012 E-Book Challenge
Here are the rules:

  1. Anyone can join. You don’t need a blog to participate.  Create a post about the challenge and link your challenge post up in the linky.
Non-Bloggers: Post your list of books in the comment section of the wrap-up post.
  2. There are four levels:
    The Mini E-Book Challenge – Read 5 E-Books.
    The “Fun Size” E-Book Challenge – Read 10 E-Books.
    The Jumbo Size E-Book Challenge – Read 20 E-Books.
The Mega Size E-Book Reading Challenge – Read 25+ E-Books.
  3. No Audio or Print books.
  4. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.
  5. The Challenge starts on January 1, 2012 and goes until December 31, 2012.

I am going to aim for “Fun Size” to start with – that’s a little less than one e-book per month, and I’m pretty sure I can do that. I reserve the right to move up a level if the need arises – but I really don’t think that’s gonna happen.
