Review with Giveaway: Evergreen

Evergreen (Mer Tales, #2)Evergreen (Mer Tales #2) by Brenda Pandos

Summary: A kingdom on the brink of war.
A king on the fringes of insanity.
A family running for their lives.

Ash and Fin’s only desire is to be together and dive into their happily ever after, though their conflicting worlds work to pull them apart. Neither is ready to convert to the other’s life: become a human or a mer. Little do they know that somewhere in Natatoria a secret holds the fine fabric of everyone’s lives together. If the truth is discovered, Ash and Fin will no longer have the luxury of waiting. They’ll be forced to choose. But will it be for loyalty or love? Or will someone else make the choice for them if they can’t decide?

Enter the watery world of treachery, greed, and the binding mer kiss as the story continues with Evergreen, book two of Mer Tales.

My Thoughts: Evergreen picks up pretty much where Everblue left off. Fin and his family are escaping to Florida while Ash is left behind in Tahoe. Both are completely anguished because of the separation, an anguish made worse than imaginable because of their being promised. Fortunately they have modern technology at their disposal and are able to touch base daily, if not more frequently.

I found Ash a bit annoying, simply because she’s kinda an idiot in this book. She knows that Colin and his father are up to no good, but likes to Fin when they show up at his house. For some unfathomable reason, she thinks she can handle things on her own. I’m not entirely sure where that comes from, to be honest, but every time she had the opportunity to come clean she didn’t. She makes a lot of stupid, misguided (I guess) decisions throughout the course of the book.

Spoilers (BIG ONES) - highlight to read
When it’s revealed that Ash is an unknown princess, I didn’t fully understand how that worked out. If she’s mer, how has her tail never manifested? If mers involuntarily get their tails at sunset, how is it possible that it never happened to Ash? How has she lived for 18 years as a human, with no inkling of her true heritage (except maybe her swimming skills)? The circumstances around her switching make perfect sense to me, but I want an explanation for how it was even possible. Did they change this poor merling into a human baby? Or was there something else they did? This is something I really hope gets fully explained in the next book! Otherwise, it’s a huge plot hole.

Despite Ash’s stupidity and the issue discussed in the spoiler above (it’s HUGE, so don’t read it if you don’t want the book spoiled. Come back after you read it to see what my issue is! ;-) ), I still really enjoyed Evergreen. It’s a great followup to Everblue (which I LOVED), and leaves me impatient for Everlost (Book #3)! Yes, I would recommend this – and read it again!
