TIME for Kids Big Book of WhatTIME for Kids Big Book of What by Editors of Time for Kids Magazine

Summary: The follow-up to the TIME For Kids BIG Book of Why and the BIG Book of How, TIME For Kids BIG Book of What presents kids 8-12 years old with answers to the kinds of intriguing questions that appeal to their sense of curiosity. Colorful graphics, spectacular photos, and clear, engaging diagrams will help answer such questions as: What is the fastest animal in the sea?; What causes acid rain?; What is the most poisonous animal?; What was the longest war on record?; What will transportation be like in the future? Divided by subject area-from animals, the human body, and technology to sports, games, and the future-the book’s photos, diagrams, art, and clear text will help kids discover the background behind the questions. TIME For Kids BIG Book of What is a must-have book to satisfy the most curious of kids

My Thoughts: When I read about this book, I was intrigued. My oldest just turned 9, and she’s very, very curious about things. She asks all sorts of questions, and I don’t always know how to explain something to her. So, when I saw this book, I thought it sounded great. And I was right! There are tons of questions – with answers, of course – covering a variety of topics (animals, inventions, space, the future, and more). And these are questions my kids have asked occasionally. The most relevant for my family at this point are:

  • What Are the Differences between African and Asian Elephants?
  • What Is a Blue Moon?
  • What Is an Adam’s Apple?
  • What Are the Northern Lights?
  • What Is the Difference between a Fruit and a Vegetable?
  • What Is the Longest a Person Can Survive Without Water?
  • What Is Mancala?
  • What Is Mardi Gras?

These are just some of the questions my kids have asked that this book has answered! (Yes, the Adam’s Apple question did come up! LOL) I know what all of these are, but not necessarily how to explain it to a child. This book is a lifesaver for these situations! Plus, there are even some activities that go along with some of the questions:

  • Create a Solar Eclipse
  • Make Smoothie Pops
  • Make Your Own Mancala Board
  • Make Your Own Boomerang

There are a few others, too. We will be trying some of these soon.

If you have inquisitive kids, this book will help a ton. I would highly recommend this for parents everywhere who don’t always know exactly how to explain the answers to some of kids’ toughest questions.
