Review: Fracture

FractureFracture by Megan Miranda

Summary: Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine-despite the scans that showed significant brain damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she’s far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can’t control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?

Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she’s reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy’s motives aren’t quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?

My Thoughts: I have seen a lot of very positive reviews of Fracture by Megan Miranda. And you know what? I agree. What a great book! I started reading and didn’t want to stop. It reads fast, and packs a great punch. And it asks, what would you do if you had one day left to live? What a great question. With that and other questions, this book really makes you think.

Delaney. For whatever reason, I love her name. Can’t figure out why. LOL She made me laugh at times. I loved her voice – most of the time. Got kinda annoyed with her when it came to Decker, but not so much that it detracted from the story. And, really, I got annoyed with him, too. But, when I think back, I realize it’s probably how many teens act – at least I remember it from my teen years. Icing on the cake that is annoying behavior? She freaks over getting a B on her report card. Don’t get me wrong, I knew people like that. I was never one, unfortunately. Such freaking always made me roll my eyes – still does, in fact! I shook my head once or twice when reading about her grades. LOL

About halfway through, I wrote a note in my Goodreads update stating that Miranda is an excellent writer. And she really is. I loved her way with words – and the Shakespeare quote she sneaked in! Any author who can work that in – especially in a YA book – gets HUGE brownie points from me! And I do wonder, how many readers noticed it? And how many teen readers noticed it? I’d love to know!

For the curious
It’s right at the beginning, page 2 of the ARC:

Move, I thought, but the only movement was the blur of white as the man passed back and forth across my immobile body. Speak, I thought, but the only sound came from his mouth, which spewed numbers and letters and foreign words. Sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Megan Miranda, I love you! ;-)

Miranda made me feel for Delaney, despite my frustration with her. I felt for her when she felt like she was one big mistake. When she felt like everyone was abandoning her. When she felt all alone. And I was proud of her by the time the story ended.

I highly recommend Fracture. It’s a book that will play with your emotions while making you think. I will be looking for more books by Megan Miranda in the future.

This inspirational tale, sounds like the kind of novel that should complete any dreamers collection.
