Summary: I’ve known it since last night:
It’s been too long to expect them to return.
Something’s happened.
May is helping out on a neighbor’s Kansas prairie homestead—just until Christmas, says Pa. She wants to contribute, but it’s hard to be separated from her family by 15 long, unfamiliar miles. Then the unthinkable happens: May is abandoned. Trapped in a tiny snow-covered sod house, isolated from family and neighbors, May must prepare for the oncoming winter. While fighting to survive, May’s memories of her struggles with reading at school come back to haunt her. But she’s determined to find her way home again.
My Thoughts: Great story about a girl who struggles academically, and those struggles leading to her doubting herself. Poor May B. is humiliated because of her difficulty reading, even though it’s clear that she’s quite intelligent. Through the course of the novel, it’s clear that her reading issues haunt her. She wants to be a teacher, but can a girl who struggles so much to make sense of the written word teach others? And, more importantly to the story, will she survive the winter?
May B. is written very well, and is a quick read. I think this will appeal to many young girls who enjoy The Little House on the Prairie and other similar books.

I agree this was a fast read. I loved reading about May’s struggles to read and to survive after the winter storm. So excited for Caroline.
