Blog Tour: Don’t Breathe a Word (Tell Me a Secret Location Connections)

I am thrilled to host one of today’s stops for Don’t Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala. The book was fabulous (click the link to read my review), and promoting it is lots of fun! This post is about locations that appear in both Don’t Breathe a Word and her previous novel, Tell Me a Secret (something I still need to read). Enjoy – and make sure to read all the way to the bottom to learn about the giveaway!

Location connections: Don’t Breathe a Word
and Tell Me a Secret

Holly CupalaThanks to Heather for inviting me to chat about Don’t Breathe a Word (it just hit the shelves!) and all of the connections with Tell Me a Secret—and there are lots of them. Heather asked me to tell you about a few secrets behind the locations…

Capitol Hill, Seattle

Capitol Hill is probably one of the most eclectic and colorful neighborhoods in Seattle. There are homeless and students and individuals of all stripes, a great place to people-watch. When Joy must escape her secretly abusive relationship and her suburban life, she finds herself in Capitol Hill, where she must learn to survive—and find the homeless boy who offered his help—before it’s too late.

Capitol Hill is the same neighborhood where Miranda and Shelley work at First Washington Tech—Joy even looks up at the bank’s clock when she first arrives. It’s a made-up bank, but I’m pretty sure there is a real BofA on that corner.

At one point Joy smells the scent of samosas from Café Shiraz, which happens to be Kamran’s parents’ restaurant in Tell Me a Secret and the site of his and Miranda’s first date! There’s also a spice collection from Café Shiraz at the zoo fundraiser party where Joy first meets Asher in Don’t Breathe a Word. (And as a real-life crossover, Shiraz happens to be the name of my forever-sweetheart.)

Cornish College of the Arts
Cornish College of the Arts

When Joy must escape from scary guy Stench, she finds herself in the labyrinth halls of Cornish College of the Arts…and runs into a character (actually, characters!) that you might recognize from Tell Me a Secret

Speaking of schools, Joy’s boyfriend Asher goes to View Ridge Prep…the same school Delaney was kicked out of in Tell Me a Secret. Hmm…could there be a connection between their stories…? There are clues in Don’t Breathe a Word… View Ridge Prep isn’t a real Seattle school, but it exists—in the novels of my friend and fellow YA author, Justina Chen—check out Girl Overboard for the original View Ridge Prep. My View Ridge Prep (used with permission, of course!) is a nod to Justina’s beautiful novels.

Chop Suey
Chop Suey

Remember the club where Delaney’s brother Dylan is a manager, and where Miranda first realizes there might be something going on between Kamran and Delaney? Yup, that is that same Chop Suey where Asher shows his true colors and Joy first meets Creed.

Speaking of more real-life connections, Freezepop (a real band started by our friends) and Gravity Echo (a made-up band) appear both in Tell Me a Secret and Don’t Breathe a Word. And that “cute East Indian guy” who introduces Freezepop at the club? He might just be the same guy that inspired Café Shiraz. ;)

Thank you, Heather, for inviting me to your blog. Stop by the rest of the DBAW tour for more chances to win books and prizes—other stops today include thoughts from Tara at The Bodacious Pen and more about Creed’s music (and a totally embarrassing video of me) at Books, Movies, and Chinese Food. Readers, I hope you love Don’t Breathe a Word!

Thank you, Holly, for the very enlightening post. Now I REALLY wanna read Tell Me a Secret – and reread DBaW so I can find the connections/clues!

***About the GIVEAWAY***

Harper has been kind enough to give Holly enough copies of Don’t Breathe a Word to do one prize per day of the tour!

Here are the details:

  • There will be one book given per day, drawn weekly. Everything entered by Saturday night will be put into a drawing on Sunday.
  • The points DO accumulate, meaning entries put in for week one are still going to count for the drawings in weeks 2 and 3.

ENTRIES:

  • There is one automatic entry (with no requirements other than filling out the form)
  • For every post you comment on, you get one entry.
  • You will have to link to the blog post you commented on.
  • There is an extra entry if you tweet, facebook, do a blog post or include on your blog sidebar. It is one for each of these, but only 1 per type (meaning you can’t tweet every day and get points for it… it’s just one tweet)
  • You need to fill out the form EACH time you do something to enter. If there is no link, the entry does not count (beyond the first initial entry, which has no link needed)

There will be a maximum of ONE international winner a week, assuming an international person gets drawn. In the case of an international winner, he or she will be getting a copy from The Book Depository.

Winners in the U.S. and Canada will received their copy directly from Holly – and it will be signed.

The final drawing will held Sunday, January 15, and will include all entries through midnight CST Sat, Jan 14.

To enter, fill out the form linked!
