Huge apologies, as this was supposed to be posted yesterday. We were out of town and I completely spaced on it. Anyway, I am very excited to be part of the tour for May B. by Caroline Starr Rose. Look for a review soon!

Proud Book Nerd: Where did you get your inspiration for May B.?
Caroline Starr Rose: May B.’s the result of a couple ideas melding together. I’ve always been fascinated by the frontier (thanks to Laura Ingalls Wilder), and I wanted to create my own strong pioneer girl. I also wanted to write about solitude and was curious about pulling off a story where a character is largely alone. As a former teacher, I wondered about children with learning disabilities outside the modern age – how they were treated, what schooling was like, what they thought of themselves.
PBN: Who are your heroes?
CSR: Strangely enough, I adore George Washington Carver. I say strangely because I have no scientific leanings whatsoever. The man himself was such an inspiration: humble, dedicated, disciplined, generous, curious, faithful. He was a remarkable teacher and an all-around admirable human being.
PBN: I absolutely love novels in verse. What’s your favorite thing about writing one?
CSR: I love the way verse novels get to the heart of a character lickety-split. There’s an honesty that’s unavoidable when writing this way. And don’t tell anyone, but I’d only read two before writing May B. (OUT OF THE DUST and HEARTBEAT).
PBN: What book (or books) are you currently reading?
CSR: WRITING THE BREAKOUT NOVEL
THE PLEDGE
THE NIGHT CIRCUS
THE TENDER BAR
PBN: I read your bio and am impressed by the various places you’ve lived. If you could go back to one of them, which would it be and why?
CSR: Gosh, that’s hard. There’s something special about every place I’ve lived, though I would like to be able to take my husband and boys to Australia someday.
Thanks for hosting me today!

Thank you so much, Caroline! I love your answers – and cannot believe the number of books you’re reading! LOL For me, more than one – or two VERY different books – at a time makes for a confused Proud Book Nerd!

About May B.
I’ve known it since last night:
It’s been too long to expect them to return.
Something’s happened.May is helping out on a neighbor’s Kansas prairie homestead—just until Christmas, says Pa. She wants to contribute, but it’s hard to be separated from her family by 15 long, unfamiliar miles. Then the unthinkable happens: May is abandoned. Trapped in a tiny snow-covered sod house, isolated from family and neighbors, May must prepare for the oncoming winter. While fighting to survive, May’s memories of her struggles with reading at school come back to haunt her. But she’s determined to find her way home again. Caroline Starr Rose’s fast-paced novel, written in beautiful and riveting verse, gives readers a strong new heroine to love.
