My Thoughts: I was extremely excited when I got a chance to read this ARC. I was then disappointed when I went back and read my review of A Touch Mortal. I remembered it quite well, but apparently not the things that irked me. My review is less positive than I’d remembered. Apparently Clifford wrote a story that was memorable enough for me to forget much of what I didn’t like. I chose not to let my anticipation be killed by that, and excitedly dove in. I started reading.

And kept reading.

And kept reading.

And, no, not all in one sitting. I expected it to be a 1-sitting read, but it wasn’t. It actually was quite slow. Not much going on for most of the book – at least nothing all that exciting. We know who Luke really is, so we know – even if Kristen doesn’t – that he cannot be trusted. So, while the details were quite surprising – and even somewhat brilliant – the betrayal in and of itself is not. I mean, c’mon! HE’S LUCIFER! You know – SATAN!

Anyway, my biggest complaint: The summary makes it sound like this book is also about Eden (like the first book). It’s not. I wanted more of her – her and Az. They almost seemed secondary characters – as did Gabriel.

For much of the story, there was a lot of nothing going on. Sure, we meet new characters. Some things happen, but the pace is so slow. And I got FRUSTRATED with these people. Everyone promises to tell everyone everything, but no one actually does it. And when one is found out, they are pissed at the other – despite their own secrets. Ugh! None of the last quarter of the book would have happened if these people COMMUNICATED with each other. But, that was the best part of the book – the part I found myself reacting to – so I guess it’s not altogether bad that these people (and I guess angels) are are so horribly flawed …

Now that the bad is off my chest, I did feel the last quarter-ish was fantabulous. There were unexpected twists and turns, and I really enjoyed the surprises. Unfortunately, they didn’t buoy the story. On the bright side, this is not as dark as A Touch Mortal was – although these people and angles have foul mouths.

I feel like this is a disconnected review, and I apologize for that. I’ve been struggling with how to write about this particular book. Overall, this was a huge disappointment. But, it ended in a way that makes me determined to read the final story. I just want to know what happens. How things play out. What exactly is going on. Hopefully the last book will have all of the answers!
