Summary: Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
My Thoughts: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is a book that grabbed my attention from the beginning and held on straight on through to the end. It’s a compelling story with a powerful premise. You can feel for Juliette – starved for human contact. But, that didn’t make her any easier for me to stomach. There were many, many times throughout the book that I just wanted to stop reading because she was annoying me almost more than I could handle. I get that she’d been through a lot and had been locked up for a long time – without human contact – but I found she was overly suspicious and way too trusting in other cases. I couldn’t reconcile how trusting she was with Adam right from the start with how suspicious she is with everyone else who comes across her path. And, really, her personality is somewhat mercurial – quiet, withdrawn one moment and ready to kick ass the next. It was hard for me to reconcile these huge differences in her behavior.
Still, I love Adam, and the story itself is very good. Especially the last half or so. It’s a quick read that I didn’t want to put down. I look forward to seeing what is coming in the next book.
