Review: The Future of Us

The Future of UsThe Future of Us by Jay Asher, Carolyn Mackler

Summary: It’s 1996, and less than half of all American high school students have ever used the Internet.

Emma just got her first computer and an America Online CD-ROM.

Josh is her best friend. They power up and log on–and discover themselves on Facebook, fifteen years in the future.

Everybody wonders what their Destiny will be. Josh and Emma are about to find out.

My Thoughts: This novel was great. I know it’s a YA book, but I think it might resonate even more with those of my generation. I graduated high school in 1995, and remember pretty much everything mentioned in the story that’s from back then. Dave Matthews Band (“Crash Into Me”), Friends, Seinfeld, AOL, dial-up Internet. All of this made it just too much fun to read. And the story itself is fun and sweet.

I don’t really have much more to say about this book, despite loving it. Will I read it again? Maybe. Would I recommend it to a friend? Most definitely!

I agree that our generation might appreciate this book more than today’s teens (I graduated in ’96). Most of them would have been too young to really remember the 90s. I can’t wait to read this and take a walk down memory lane.

I definitely remember the things you mentioned in your review, and I was born in 1993. I think it depends on your parents a little, too, if you were introduced to some stuff, but I definitely get that your generation would have a more first hand, I-literally-grew-up-with-it knowledge of the topics mentioned. :)

Even so, I’m super excited to read this and your review made me want to read it more!

I hope you write a review, because I’ll look forward to seeing what your thoughts are on it! I’m sure those in the YA target audience will enjoy it, as it’s a lot of fun – and likely will be for anyone who knows what facebook is! ;-)
