Review: A Beautiful Dark

A Beautiful DarkA Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies

Summary: On the night of Skye’s seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers. Complete opposites—like fire and ice—Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. Their sudden appearance sends Skye’s life into a tailspin. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move—only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past.

In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can’t help falling for, and Devin, who she can’t stay away from, the consequences of Skye’s choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.

My Thoughts: A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies is a beautiful story. Davies is a gifted writer, and spins a bit of a different twist on the paranormal theme. And, honestly, I’m afraid to say too much for fear of spoiling the book. Part of the appeal, part of what makes it so good, is the mystery behind what exactly is going on. Both in Skye’s life, but also in Skye herself. The reader is given hints, and enough to create a theory as to what’s going on, but it’s not hit-you-over-the-head obvious. There’s not enough to feel like you’ve got it all figured out. And, even if you figure out what’s going on with Skye, the bigger picture is an even bigger mystery. I think it’s safe to say that most readers – even those who are more intuitive – will not see what’s coming. You know a certain someone is trouble. You see Skye’s confusion, especially pertaining to Asher and Devin. It’s written so well that you can share in her confusion.

Love Skye. Not so much her name, but love her. She’s got a great head on her shoulders, and despite her confusion over things she’s still trying to do the right thing. And not just in general, but also right by her closest friends and her aunt, the only family she has.

Big complaint: Huge cliffhanger ending. Huge. I sure hope the next book isn’t too far off!

Overall, this is an excellent story. It’s a unique (in a good way) story. I would recommend it, and maybe eve read it again sometime.

Favorite Quotes: Excellent writing. Two quotes were needing to be shared.

I was starting to realize – no matter how much I wished it wasn’t true – that we were growing up. There were some things that your best friends just couldn’t fix simply by being there for you. ~ pages 311-312 (ARC)

This is a remarkable revelation Skye has, and it just struck me as pivotal. She’s learning a lot about herself, and about life. And I think this really shows how much she’s maturing.

As I watched her soar gracefully over the treetops, I couldn’t help but think that sometimes beauty camouflaged the ugliest creatures. ~ page 378 (ARC)

Such an amazing observation. Another thing that shows Skye’s growing maturity. And, man, is this quote true or what?

I love this review! I totally agree with you that with some books, you really can’t say a lot about the plot without giving away some of what makes reading the books a good experience.
