Review: Supernaturally

Supernaturally (Paranormalcy, #2)Supernaturally by Kiersten White

Summary (from Goodreads): Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.

So much for normal.

My Thoughts: I really wanted to like Supernaturally by Kiersten White – and was hoping to like it even more than I liked Paranormalcy. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. This was the somewhat typical disappointing second book in a series.

I loved Evie in Paranormalcy – really, REALLY didn’t like her much this time. The strong, kick-bleep female lead was replaced with a whiny, lying, annoying female lead. She actually kind of reminded me of the lead in Jennifer Echols’ Love Story in that she rushed to conclusions, not giving people – in this case Lend – enough credit to think for themselves. Even when she has a chance to come clean with Lend on everything she’s keeping from him, she chooses to withhold important information. And, while in Paranormalcy she sees her own selfishness and works to change that, it’s clear to see that her selfishness has returned. Drove. me. nuts.

And now for some spoilage. Sorry, but I feel it’s absolutely necessary.

Spoilers
Jack. I can’t believe no one was all that suspicious of him. I’m sorry, but I saw right through him. I KNEW he was the one who let uber-vamp out of the Center. I want to know why no one thought to even consider that as the possible scenario! I mean, he was new, only been there a few months. I didn’t get the idea that they knew him all that well. When he finally showed his true self, I was not in the least bit surprised. No shocking revelations there. And nothing shocking (or even mildly surprising) about Evie getting out of the Paths on her own, either.

One thing I must comment more on is Evie with Lend. The following line:

He deserved the chance to make up his own mind, but I’d taken it away from him by hiding the truth, like so many people had hidden it from me. And, sure, he hadn’t chosen me, wouldn’t choose me, but it was his choice. ~ page 328 (ARC)

That line pissed me off. She didn’t give him a choice. She told him the truth, then said good-bye. (Rolling my eyes here.) That’s what annoyed me the most. She’s realizing this AFTER having told him it’s over. He didn’t NOT choose her. She is the one who broke it off! FRUSTRATING. Again, drove. me. nuts. Sometimes I wished I could reach through the pages and slap her.

Despite my frustration, I still love Kiersten White’s storytelling and I look forward to Endlessly, book 3 in the Paranormalcy series.

I was expecting her to evolve in this book not to back-walk into her selfishness. This alone made me hard to like it. During whole book i had a feeling that the core-fundamental is wrong. This could be a great sequel but it took wrong direction. Maybe next one ?

interesting review. I love the covers on this book. And it sounds so good, I hate when a character disappoints
