Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

The Unbecoming of Mara DyerThe Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Summary: Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.

She’s wrong.

My Thoughts: I’m kinda torn with how to rate/review this book. For most of it, was I hooked right from the start. It’s very well-written, and it had me from the first word.

But, as we get closer to the end, closer to the resolution, closer to the explanation of things … well, I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the explanation of things. I felt like it was just too out there, too convenient, too much. Kinda convoluted. No, not convoluted. Too easy. In a way. I’m not sure how to describe my thoughts.

So, I think I’m going to take a break from writing this review, and from figuring out a rating. … Or maybe not.

But then, the very end. AWESOME. But I don’t know if it’s enough to redeem the few chapters that had me thinking WTF, where did this story go wrong? Is this really right? And then the ending, and I wonder how much really is explained, or if those explanations are way off. It’s clear that nothing is as it seems, so I’m wondering about the parts that didn’t work for me.

I am very much looking forward to the next book.

I feel like this is a jumbled review, and I’m sorry for that. Despite the part that didn’t work for me, I did really, really like this book.

Quotes: There actually were lots of great quotable nuggets in this book, but I only had the presence of mind to note one. (See, the book really did suck me in!)

Thinking something does not make it true. Wanting something does not make it real. ~ page 312 (ARC)

What an honest review – I think it actually piqued my interest in this book (I hadn’t been paying much attention to it and wasn’t planning to), so thank you! :D

When I do pick it up, I will have to brace myself for the “too convenient” part and remember that the ending will be worth the wait!

I’ll be interested to see if you get the same impression, or if perhaps I missed something. Other reviews I’ve read have made me wonder!
