The Soundtrack to Henrietta The Dragon Slayer

I love listening to music and listen to it at various stages of my novel writing process.

While editing Henrietta The Dragon Slayer I listened to Baroque music. I played the same CD over and over. While transcribing my handwritten notes of the first draft, I listened to Evanescence’s first album, Fallen. While writing the first draft by hand, I wrote most of it while sitting outdoors. My soundtrack there was the sound of the estuary lapping the shore, the whoosh of the wind and the occasional cry of seagulls flying overhead.

For those who are curious, baroque music has been shown to create a calm state in the body and helps put the two hemispheres in synch so we can concentrate better. Yep, perfect for the concentration needed for editing. The album I love to listen to while editing all of my novels is Simply Baroque 2 with Yo-Yo Ma and Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.

Sometimes while working on Henrietta The Dragon Slayer and on the sequel that I’m currently writing, I write in cafes. There my soundtrack is people talking, the hiss of the espresso maker, the grinding whirr of beans being ground and whatever music they play on the overhead speakers. When I don’t like the ambient sounds I plug in and listen to dance music on my iPhone like the soundtrack of Step Up 3, or Florence & the Machine, Christina Perri, or Lady Gaga.

I use music to change my mood, and get in the mood for writing. Music is an important part of my writing ritual.

I just have to say that the music of Evanescence captures Henrietta’s passion and warrior spirit.

What music inspires you to action? I’d love to know!

Read an excerpt of Henrietta The Dragon Slayer here.

Henrietta the Dragon Slayer is a magical fantasy novel with complex, well-rounded characters having adventures while dealing with their real life personality issues. Even though Henrietta has a great reputation as a great Dragon Slayer, she discovers a pacifist streak that makes her previous lifestyle difficult to continue. The witty dialogue and good story line makes this book hard to put down. It’s really fun to read. It’s also very satisfying to read about a girl heroine fighting the good fight.” — Jeri
