Review: Tales from the Edge of Forever

Tales From The Edge of ForeverTales From The Edge of Forever by Alexander Hammond

Summary (from Goodreads): An anthology of mind bending imagination, Tales from the Edge of Forever offers a delicious collection of wildly original vignettes mixing fantasy, speculation, spirituality and science invention. Hammond has created stories with a depth and thoughtfulness that transcend their brevity. Whether on the streets of Manhattan or at the very edge of time and space itself the authors’ scenarios tease and intrigue in this stunningly unique collection. A total of twenty three creatively brilliant stories to captivate even the most jaded fantasy enthusiast, this book both challenges and enchants.

My Thoughts: I feel badly for not having liked this book as much as I was hoping to. I’m a HUGE fan of fantasy (especially high fantasy), but not so much the sci-fi, generally speaking. I like things like The Andromeda Strain but other types of sci-fi (aliens, cyborgs, etc.) just don’t do it for me. (See, I don’t know the genre very well, as I’m sure there are names for the different types, sub-genres, but I’ve no idea what they are.) I also have never been one for short stories in general. There are a few here and there that I like, including a few from this book, but overall they’re just – well, they’re too short. I like greater character development. I like a bigger story, which is what generally one gets out of novel-length works in general.

As I mentioned above, there were a couple of stories that I really liked out of this:

  • Deity ~ A teen boy finds out he is God. While, as a Christian, it rubbed me a tiny bit the wrong way, I LOVED the ending of it, thus I love the story! ;-)
  • Top Secret ~ This is about humans and aliens. And that’s all I’m gonna say, to avoid spoiling anything. Again, the ending was great, and that made what already was a good story just fabulous!
  • Abracadabra ~ A magician is confronted by The League. Another really, really good story.

I’m keeping these extremely brief and vague because I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone.

I really think fans of science-fiction will LOVE these stories. So, please, don’t let me keep you from reading this book! Alexander Hammond is, in fact, a good writer. He’s very descriptive, and I enjoy his style. So, Mr. Hammond, it’s definitely not you. It’s me.
