I saw this challenge a couple of days ago, and thought it’s such a good idea. Then decided there’s no way I could do it – I have too many reviews to do. How could I squeeze this in?
But then I’ve seen it around more and more. And every time, I want to do it. So, I decided to go for it!
The plan is simple. I’m going to chose a book to read. Once I finish that book, I’ll chose a blurb from the front or back cover and read a book written by the quoted author. I’ll read 10 books in this fashion, just to see where I end up. Will all the books have a common theme? Will they be in the same genre? Will all of the authors be the same gender or ethnicity? Will they all have the same publisher? Are they all equally well known? Or will the books appear to be nothing more than a completely random list?
… The challenge will run for the next year, July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.
I’m not currently reading a book with a blurb on it, but once I do, I will begin my journey. This just sounds like too much fun to pass up!
My Journey:
- Fateful by Claudia Gray
- The Awakening L.J. Smith
- DEAD END! So, I’ll start over with the next book that has an author blurb on it.
My Journey, Take 2:
- Prom and Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg
- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
- Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
- Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
- DEAD END! So, I’ll start over with the next book that has an author blurb on it.
My Journey, Take 3:
- Cherished by Kim Cash Tate
- The Yada Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson

This really does sounds like a fun idea and I am like you I have to many book to review, but it would be fun.

I keep signing up for challenges and then they give me heatburn because I’m afraid of letting myself down. Good luck on this one, too.

LOL I know exactly what you mean. It’s why I almost didn’t do it. Then I noticed that there’s no quota or anything, so I figure I can attempt this one with minimal pressure!

This strikes me as one of the “riskier” challenges around–because if the writer who provided the blurb is really unfamiliar, then you have no idea what you’re getting into! On the other hand, you know what they say about big risks paying off.
When I was still reading a lot of Romance, I noticed that I couldn’t trust blurbs. The authors who loved the authors I loved weren’t authors I could love, too. (That last sentence makes sense, right?) It was even worse when two authors were great friends in real life: I’d really like one and not be able to stand the other. Quite curious.
Do you have any previous experience with blurbs as recommendations?
Nope, I have never before used blurbs as recommendations, so this will be interesting. The good thing is that if I don’t like one of them, I’m off to someone else thanks to the next blurb!
And so far, I suspect it won’t be too bad. My first book with a blurb is Fateful by Claudia Gray. The only author blurb is by L. J. Smith – I guess I’ll be taking my first look into The Vampire Diaries!
In the past year, I have had lots of literary risks pay off. So, I’m somewhat optimistic that this will be more positive than negative! (Here’s hoping I’m right about that!)
