Review: Chasing Brooklyn

Chasing Brooklyn Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

Summary: Brooklyn can’t sleep. Her boyfriend, Lucca, died only a year ago, and now her friend Gabe has just died of an overdose. Every time she closes her eyes, Gabe’s ghost is there waiting for her. She has no idea what he wants or why it isn’t Lucca visiting her dreams.

Nico can’t stop. He’s always running, trying to escape the pain of losing his brother, Lucca. But when Lucca’s ghost begins leaving messages, telling Nico to help Brooklyn, emotions come crashing to the surface.

As the nightmares escalate and the messages become relentless, Nico reaches out to Brooklyn. But neither of them can admit that they’re being haunted. Until they learn to let each other in, not one soul will be able to rest.

My Thoughts: Wow. I really, really liked this one! (More to come.)

That is what I read quickly on Goodreads before running out of town for the aforementioned family emergency. And, honestly, enough has happened in the time I was away that my brain is fried. So, this isn’t gonna be much longer.

The book is somewhat creepy, but very good. I think it would’ve been downright SCARY if it hadn’t been written in verse – and that makes me extra thankful! I’m not big on scary books, movies, or anything. This was enough to give me the chills in a few spots. But, without too many details, it wasn’t something that kept me from falling asleep. LOL The story overall, I found to be sweet. It was very enjoyable.

I believe this was my third novel in verse, and I gotta tell you I’m fully sold now. While poetry isn’t generally my thing, I LOVE it as a novel. It’s amazing how much can be conveyed this way. It really is like reading a full novel, but without a lot of the fluff that often slows other stories down. You get all of the important stuff, and I never felt anything was missing. Excellent book.

Favorite Quotes: There were several that I liked, but I’ll just share a few.

We met in September
of our Sophomore year.

By November,
he was my first
“I love you”
boyfriend.

Some thought it was impossible
after only two months.

I’d reply, love doesn’t tell time.

Love is simply there
or it isn’t. ~ pages 1-2

I especially like the last few lines, but I felt the context was important for the impact.

Sometimes life is a feast
with eggs Benedict and hollandaise sauce,
waffles and strawberries,
sausage links and hashed brown potatoes.

And sometimes life is scrambled eggs.

In the end,
your stomach gets full just the same.

And years from now,
you may not remember exactly what you ate.

But you’ll remember who you ate with. ~ pages 370-371

I loved all of the breakfast talk, and the way it all ties into relationships. I love it, absolutely love it!
