Summary (from Goodreads): Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she’ll be the mate of alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers.
But when she violates her masters’ laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything— including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?
My Thoughts: Very, very good. Especially the last 100 pages or so. I am so glad I finally got around to reading it!
In all honesty, the book is kind of slow at first. It’s not that it’s boring – it isn’t. It’s actually quite interesting and compelling. There’s just nothing that gave me the have-to-read-until-it’s-over-or-I-drop feeling, either. Not until the last several chapters. (And let’s just say I am so glad to have Wolfsbane sitting right here to get started on now, because waiting for the next book would be painful!)
Anyway …
Calla is really neat. I like her. She tries to be strong. She tries to protect those she loves. And she is confused as hell. I could almost feel her confusion, her inner struggles, her uncertainty. She’s in a very tough spot. And I think she handles herself very well. I also liked Ren. While at times he ticked me off, or I thought he was being a jerk, I could tell that he truly did care for Calla. His actions by the end made it clear that I was correct. I feel bad for him. Part of me really wants Calla to be with him rather than Shay.
I am stuck. What is the truth? Either story is believable, but I side toward the Keepers being the liars. I’m guessing we’ll find out more as the series progresses.
And with that said, I must be going now. Time to get into Wolfsbane!

The cover is gorgeous – shimmery but muted. Really cool!
Just finished Nightshade earlier today (about 2 AM, couldn’t go to sleep with only 50 pages left). But totally agree that the last 100 or so pages are great compared to the first 2/3 of the book (but also not boring, haha). Had it sitting on my shelf since released day back in October and glad I finally started it plus finished!!!!! Now eagerly awaiting late July!
Funny. We were reading about the same time, although I finished it shortly after 11 last night!
[...] Goodreads shortly after finishing: Wow, wow, wow! I didn’t think it would be quite as good as Nightshade was, but I was so wrong. It’s even better. [...]
This was one of my favorite releases of last year. Didn’t you want to strangle Ren’s neck one minute, then give him a big bear hug the next, then smother him with your love? LOL. I am Team Shay tho, all the way!
I’m reading Wolfsbane now too!
