Review: Falling Under

Falling Under (Falling Under, #1)Falling Under by Gwen Hayes

Summary (from Goodreads): Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she’s seen Haden before- not around town, but in her dreams.

As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.

And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia’s not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

My Thoughts: Fantastic. What a ride, and what an amazing story. I loved the brief time – down is up, or was it up is down? – with Haden’s perspective. Human Haden’s perspective. Fabulously written. I think it was very clever to have the human perspective (mostly) handled this way.

Theia is a very likable, interesting character. The story opens with the anniversary of the day her mother died, which is also Theia’s birthday. Theia never knew her mom, and grew up in a VERY strict – I would actually say overly, to the point of suffocating the girl, strict – home. Her father is a stuffy Englishman. Sorry, but I just can’t find a better – more diplomatic – way to say it. He fits that (horrible) stereotype – no, he IS that stereotype …

Anyway, Theia is amazingly able to deal with her father’s suffocating rules. Until the day she sees a man on fire fall from the sky. (And that’s basically the first line of this book, something about her life changing the day she saw him fall from the sky.) This book had me at hello – I mean at the very first line.

First what keeps me going is wondering what the heck Haden is. I had kind of an idea, but wanted full confirmation. I was close, but still quite surprised (although not quite so as Theia, I suspect). The most remarkable thing is that it doesn’t sway Theia. She’s still so desperately in love with him that she doesn’t care what the cost might be.

Ahh, the innocence and naivete of youth … to believe that love can conquer anything. Any. Thing. What faith.

This is a very, very good book. I spent all day reading it, and kinda wished I didn’t have to try to juggle demanding kiddos at the same time … I would’ve loved to be able to just submerse myself in this book and not come up for air until I was done. I’m thinking that when the sequel comes out I’ll make sure to have some dedicated alone time in which I can just read and forget about everything else.

My Rating: 5 stars

Favorite Quote: There was lots of really good imagery and description in this book, and the following was one of my favorites.

A faraway voice – my own, I think – warned me away from him. Move away, put distance between you, fight the dark magic.

I could have just as easily held off a tidal wave with an umbrella.
