Review: Trapped

TrappedTrapped by Michael Northrop

Summary: The day the blizzard started, no one knew that it was going to keep snowing for a week. That for those in its path, it would become not just a matter of keeping warm, but of staying alive….

Scotty and his friends Pete and Jason are among the last seven kids at their high school waiting to get picked up that day, and they soon realize that no one is coming for them. Still, it doesn’t seem so bad to spend the night at school, especially when distractingly hot Krista and Julie are sleeping just down the hall. But then the power goes out, then the heat. The pipes freeze, and the roof shudders. As the days add up, the snow piles higher, and the empty halls grow colder and darker, the mounting pressure forces a devastating decision….

My Thoughts: This is a fast read, and very good. I really liked it a lot – for the most part. The narrator’s voice is great. Some of Scotty’s comments cracked me up at times – especially earlier in the book, before things got serious. The plot moves quickly, and the book grabs you, sucks you in, and spits you out unsatisfied – at least it did for me. It ended too soon.

I’ll get back to the ending in a bit. There is some suspense, especially as time drags on and things happen – the water stops flowing, the roof starts creaking. Scary stuff, especially when you think about it. Who knows how many people are stranded in the roads – are these kids’ parents even aware that they didn’t make it home? How is anyone going to get to them? All sorts of questions to ask. And, overall, it handles these issues well. Doesn’t answer all of the questions, but I think they were more hypotheticals.

Now back to the ending. I hate it. Hate, hate, hate it. Talk about a bad break. Before getting into the possible spoilers, let me just say that because of the ending, I feel like I just cannot rate this book as highly as I’d like to. It feels too unfinished, and I just hate when books end feeling like that.

Possible Spoilers (highlight to read)
The story isn’t over. We know, simply by virtue of Scotty being the narrator, that he makes it out alive. We don’t know if he’s fully in tact (meaning whether he lost anything because of frostbite). We know for sure the identity of one dead kid, but did all of the others make it out OK? I’m assuming so, but we aren’t told for sure (and I REALLY hate when authors leave big ends open like that). I want to know if all of the others still at the school are OK. I want to know a little bit of the aftermath so far as these kids are concerned. How do they all process the death of one of their own? Did they all feel responsible? Are they all friends, or at least do they all have a certain respect for each other, after what they’ve been through? Did Scotty get back into the basketball stuff? Anything happen with Krista and Scotty? How did everyone’s family and home fare? What happened with Jason’s dad? And what about the teacher that was with them at first?

So many unanswered questions. No, I suppose, they don’t all require answers, I guess. But, at least at the bare minimum I’d like to know of the others’ rescue and maybe a tiny bit about after it all is over. Just a quick this-is-what’s-up-with-us-now thing. Is that too much to ask for?

I came from Cym Lowell’s Book Review Party Wednesday (BRPW).

One of the things I do not like is cliffhanger endings… maybe that is why I like Jim Butcher so much. He always delivers a satisfying ending to all his books even if it’s part of a series. My hate of unsatisfying endings is also one of the reasons I read reviews, hoping to avoid them :)

Visiting via Cym Lowell’s blog, too.

I really like the sounds of this book. Haven’t heard tell of the author before, but I definitely have to keep an eye out for this one–especially with a contentious ending (didn’t read the spoilers).

I think the way you handle your spoilers is really good – can I steal this idea please? Also. Great Review. I’m really intrigued – I didn’t read the spoiler however – can I just check about the ending which you say isn’t finished – is that because there’s another book due that you’re aware and this is just a cliffhanger or is it genuinley one of those books that has an open end??

I am not aware of there being another book planned. I don’t think there is. I think the author just felt it was done, but I wanted a bit more. And, yes, feel free to steal the spoiler treatment that I use! ;-) Just be aware that it won’t work if your blog post background isn’t white.
