Review: Faerie Winter

Faerie Winter (Faerie, #2)Faerie Winter by Janni Lee Simner

Summary (from Goodreads): The war has been over for 40 years, and finally Liza’s town is accepting children born with fairy talents. Then a nearby town is destroyed, and Liza discovers that the war might not be over after all. It seems some faeries survived and have crossed over into the human world to continue the fight. And the most powerful and merciless of them all—the Queen herself—may be among them.

My Thoughts: A very good continuation of Liza’s story. I really enjoyed it, and felt that most questions I had after Bones of Faerie were answered. I must confess, though, that this leaves me wanting more. Not because of unfinished business (although one might say there is some unfinished business), but simply because I want to see more of this world. I want to see more of Liza’s adventures. I want to see what comes next. (I also wouldn’t mind a prequel, with the full story of the War.)

There was a little bit of predictability, but nothing that ruins the story. Just connections that seemed pretty obvious to me. The overall plot wasn’t predictable, though. I thoroughly enjoyed delving back into the world After, and continuing on with Liza’s story.

Favorite Quotes: There are a couple that struck a chord with me this time.

No one said anything wasn’t their fault unless they feared it was. ~ page 40 (ARC)

I think tacked onto the end of that would should be “… or unless they were liars.” ;-)

“That the past cannot be undone was one of the War’s hardest lessons. We remain responsible for our actions there, but we have no power over them. We only have power over the thing we do next.” ~ page 157 (ARC)

This is something everyone needs to realize at some point or another. While we are responsible for past actions, there’s nothing we can do about it. We can only control what we’re doing from this moment forward. Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve just doesn’t help anything.

My Rating: 4.5 stars

One Response to Review: Faerie Winter
  1. [...] Born in the wake of the war between humanity and Faerie, Liza lived in a world where green things never slept, where trees sought to root in living flesh and bone. But now the forests have fallen silent. Even the evergreens’ branches are bare. Winter crops won’t grow, and the threat of starvation looms. And deep in the forest a dark, malevolent will is at work. To face it, Liza will have to find within herself something more powerful than magic alone. My Review [...]
