Bones of Faerie by Janni Lee Simner
Summary (from Goodreads): The war between humanity and Faerie devastated both sides. Or so 15-year-old Liza has been told. Nothing has been seen or heard from Faerie since, and Liza’s world bears the scars of its encounter with magic. Trees move with sinister intention, and the town Liza calls home is surrounded by a forest that threatens to harm all those who wander into it. Then Liza discovers she has the Faerie ability to see—into the past, into the future—and she has no choice but to flee her town. Liza’s quest will take her into Faerie and back again, and what she finds along the way may be the key to healing both worlds.
My Thoughts: This was quite good. I love the world of After – after the War. Plants and trees attacking people – nature in general that isn’t safe for humans at all. What an amazing world. And Liza’s coming into her own magic was fantastic!
It’s hard to imagine a world in which our modern society is thrown back into the days before all of our modern conveniences – and even worse, in that nature is so hostile. Simner does an excellent job of showing us this “world” and how people cope with it. It must be especially hard on those adult humans who were there Before, when things were much simpler.
I really enjoyed this, and couldn’t wait to start the sequel, Faerie Winter (review coming shortly). I will keep my copy of this and read it again and again – and hopefully my daughter will read it when she gets a bit older.
