Review: Still Missing

Still MissingStill Missing by Chevy Stevens

Summary (from Goodreads): On the day she was abducted, Annie O’Sullivan, a thirty-two year old realtor, had three goals—sell a house, forget about a recent argument with her mother, and be on time for dinner with her ever- patient boyfriend. The open house is slow, but when her last visitor pulls up in a van as she’s about to leave, Annie thinks it just might be her lucky day after all. Interwoven with the story of the year Annie spent as the captive of psychopath in a remote mountain cabin, which unfolds through sessions with her psychiatrist, is a second narrative recounting events following her escape—her struggle to piece her shattered life back together and the ongoing police investigation into the identity of her captor.

The truth doesn’t always set you free.

Still Missing is that rare debut find—a shocking, visceral, brutal and beautifully crafted debut novel.

My Thoughts: What to say about this book. It was very good. Very well-written. There were twists that I didn’t see coming at all, but twists I did see coming. I absolutely love the title and premise – just because she’s back from being kidnapped doesn’t mean she’s really back. The girl – er, woman – who had been abducted? She’s Still Missing. Love it. I am sure that is one of the truest statements out there.

There were times that this book reminded me of Room, but I liked this a lot better. I loved the format – Annie telling her story to her therapist. You can see how she’s healing and improving as the therapy continues, as she works through more of her issues resulting from her time with “The Freak.” (I love that that is what she calls her abductor!) As the story unfolded about the investigation, I could piece some of it together on my own. But, I wasn’t able to put all of the pieces together. The main person behind this? Wow. Did NOT see that coming at all. Nice twist, and so unimaginable.

This was a very powerful story, and days after finishing it I’m still thinking about it – despite having finished something else since then! This is one I do see myself reading again. It was that good.

My Rating: 4.5 stars

“Still Missing” Sounds wonderful. You reviewed it nicely. It seems like a book that could use more word of mouth recommendations.
