Review: Flight Plan

Flight PlanFlight Plan by Lee Burns & Braxton Brady

Summary (from Goodreads): A life of greater possibilities, potentials and passions awaits the emerging young man. Flight Plan is a resource and source of instruction and encouragement for boys, their parents, and other adults who work with boys. This book is written with the aim of offering boys a vision and definition of manhood before they get there, a framework for considering the challenges of adolescence, and tools and strategies for making healthy and appropriate choices during those years. (Visit the book’s Web site for more information: http://www.theflightplanbook.com/.)

My Thoughts: Yes, I know, I’m not a boy or a man. But, I have a son, and that is why I agreed to read it. I think Flight Plan is a book that could be a good resource for boys as they approach the onset of puberty. It’s written in an easy-to-understand and matter-of-fact way. I think most boys will have no problem picking it up and reading through it. The voice is conversational, but also authoritative. I think it’s actually effective.

What I’m not sure about it some of the suggestions. Not ever having experience as a boy/man, I have no idea how realistic they are. Even if encouraged in a book like this, would any teenager want to talk with their parents about things like masturbation, sex, and their emotions? I have no idea – especially not when boys are the target audience.

I love that everything was very much rooted in living for God. That’s something boys don’t hear enough. There’s lots and lots of focus on helping girls as they grow, but not as much for boys. This helps to fill that void pretty well.

There are some tidbits I loved. One was to think about every girl you date as someone else’s future wife. As such, treat her the way you hope someone’s treating your future wife. Never would have thought of it that way, but, yeah, I like that. There are quotes and stories from and about various athletes, pilots, etc. that I think likely will hit home with many boys, too.

My Rating: 3.5 stars
