Review: Wake Unto Me

Wake Unto MeWake Unto Me by Lisa Cach

Summary: A haunted castle, a handsome young man dead for four hundred years, one heck of a scary portrait of a witch, and a treasure hunt – not to mention a princess for a roommate! – all await 15-year-old American girl Caitlyn Monahan when she earns a scholarship to a French boarding school.

There are secrets behind the stone walls of Chateau de la Fortune, buried for centuries along with the mystery of who killed Raphael, the charming ghost who visits Caitlyn at night. But as Caitlyn unearths the history of the castle, nothing scares her as badly as the secret she learns about herself, and the reason she was chosen to come to the Fortune School.

And nothing breaks her heart as badly as falling in love with a dead guy.

My Thoughts: This is one of those books that I felt like I was taking a chance on, and I’m so glad I did! It was excellent! The summary was just the tip of the iceberg. Caitlyn is an outsider in Oregon, and doesn’t find fitting in much easier in her new boarding school. Although she does make a couple of good friends, not counting the man of her dreams – literally. Told in the third person, this story is almost entirely from Caitlyn’s point of view. But not inside her head, and it worked. This book grabbed onto me right at the start, and I couldn’t read the last third fast enough. I had my ideas about what was going to happen, but I had to see how it all came together. I believe it was artfully done, the individual threads being woven together quite masterfully. I felt like this book was so much more than just the impression summary leaves. I was surprised by the twists and turns and even the conclusion. (That is despite my having figured a key something out.)

I really enjoyed Wake Unto Me, and thought the descriptiveness was just delightful. I could picture the castle, the map on the floor, the well, etc. And Caitlin’s loop was just fantastic. I did not see that coming at all! (I think that, once you’ve read it, you’ll know what I mean by “Caitlin’s loop.”) It was really cool to see that come together. This is another book that I hope to get my hands on my own copy so I can read it when the mood strikes.

My Rating: 5 stars
