Review: Matched

MatchedMatched by Ally Condie

Summary: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander’s face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham’s face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it’s a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she’s destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can’t stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society’s infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

My Thoughts: I recently read Delirium by Lauren Oliver, and was struck by how similar these two books are. While there are significant differences – the way society is built, the main events in the story, etc. – the basic premise was much the same. A teenager in a VERY structured utopian society dares to fall in love – with someone other than the boy with whom she’s been matched. (That is a major difference, as in Delirium love is seen as a disease.)

I thought that Matched was very well written, and the descriptions were very well done. I could see the hill outside Cassia’s grandfather’s home. I could see the sky, the bright green area at which she spoke with the Official regarding the mix-up with her match. I did find myself wondering, though, when the Official said that they did it on purpose. That it was an experiment and that Cassia reacted exactly as they had expected. Is that true, or is the “we planned it that way” thing something they always say to cover up their screw-ups? I have to say I feel sorry for Xander. Poor guy. But what a sweetheart to help her despite what it means for them.

I look forward to the next installment in this series, as I am eager to find out what happens next and where this is going.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
