Review: Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict

Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen AddictRude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler

My Summary: This is basically the other side of Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict. While Courtney is off living Jane’s life, Jane is in our modern world living Courtney’s life. Her amazement at lights without candles, “carriages” without horses, and other modern items is not surprising. She also struggles to fit in when she’s not used to modern fashion or modern behaviors – both of which are far different from, and less modest than those she knew. Add to it, Courtney’s life is a mess. From a bad job and an apartment in a less-than-ideal neighborhood to a broken engagement and a close friend she’s not sure she can trust, Jane has a lot more to figure out that just the modern culture.

My Thoughts: This book was fun, and I really enjoyed it. But, I don’t think it was quite as good as Confessions. It, too, had some laugh-out-loud moments, but not enough to save it from what I felt were problems.

The main thing is the end. The end of Confessions is such that I thought Jane and Courtney eventually got back to the lives from which they came. The end of this book, however, suggests otherwise. I liked them both enough to go back and read them both back to back and see if that helps. Maybe I just had too many other books in between the two.

Anyway, I think one thing against this book, which really shouldn’t be but is why I couldn’t go with 5 stars this time, is that I just couldn’t relate to Jane the way I could relate Courtney. I’m sure it comes largely from the fact that I am part of Courtney’s generation, and have no idea what living in Jane’s time would’ve been like. But, I find it hard to believe that someone like Jane would so quickly and easily adapt the mores and ways of our modern society. A society that is much less prudish, much less religious. And really, I think that’s an even bigger issues, as it spans the whole book (almost), and the previous one only is the last chapter or two.

That said, I (as a HUGE Jane Austen fan) did find this book quite enjoyable. I’m glad I read it. Will I read it again? Probably, simply because I know I’ll read Confessions again, and might want to read them one after the other.

My Rating: 4 stars

Thanks for noting the spoilers — I skipped through a portion of this because this is on my list to read! I really enjoyed the first one!

You’re welcome! I always hate spoilers, and usually try to avoid them. This was one of those times, though, when I felt that I HAD to mention what I did. ;-)
