Summary (from Goodreads): Bestselling recording artist TobyMac has a passion for inspiring believers to step out and take action for their faith. Through compelling stories and Scripture, City on Our Knees will illustrate how Christians past and present have set aside differences, come together in unity, and stepped forward in action and prayer. Readers will be encouraged and inspired to do the same, summoning the commitment, courage, and devotion to bring a city to its knees.
My Thoughts: Inspired by TobyMac’s hit song by the same name, this is a quick, easy read. But it’s inspiring. Reading these stories of how God helped people come together to help others is just amazing. It’s a reminder of just how awesome God is. Stories come from as recently as the earthquake in Haiti earlier this year to as long ago as the days of the Roman Empire. While some include people I had heard of, many had not. One of my favorite stories is the one about the man who became known as St. Patrick.
Interspersed throughout the book are various quotes. From Bible passages (in varying versions: NLT, KLV, NIV, etc.) and quotes from various people of notes to lyrics from the song by the same name, there is a plethora of quotes. Very good quotes, I must add. Two of my favorites:
The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, and prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray.
~ Samuel Chadwick (p. 197 of the book)
The circumstances of our lives have as much power as we choose to give them. ~ David McNally (p. 202 of the book)
My Rating: 3.5 stars
