Review: Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict

Confessions of a Jane Austen AddictConfessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler

Summary: After nursing a broken engagement with Jane Austen novels and Absolut, Courtney Stone wakes up and finds herself not in her Los Angeles bedroom or even in her own body, but inside the bedchamber of a woman in Regency England. Who but an Austen addict like herself could concoct such a fantasy?

Not only is Courtney stuck in another woman’s life, she is forced to pretend she actually is that woman; and despite knowing nothing about her, she manages to fool even the most astute observer. But not even her level of Austen mania has prepared Courtney for the chamber pots and filthy coaching inns of nineteenth-century England, let alone the realities of being a single woman who must fend off suffocating chaperones, condom-less seducers, and marriages of convenience.

This looking-glass Austen world is not without its charms, however. There are journeys to Bath and London, balls in the Assembly Rooms, and the enigmatic Mr. Edgeworth, who may not be a familiar species of philanderer after all. But when Courtney’s borrowed brain serves up memories that are not her own, the ultimate identity crisis ensues. Will she ever get her real life back, and does she even want to?

My Thoughts: Ever since I read Pride and Prejudice in AP English my senior year in high school, I was hooked on Austen. I studied English in college, and even took a Jane Austen course my senior year. I LOVED that course. What could be better than spending a semester reading and discussing Austen’s works? ;-)

When I saw this book available for review, I didn’t hesitate to sign up. And I am so glad I did! I absolutely loved this book! I am a huge Jane Austen fan (although not as much as Courtney/Jane in this story), and was delighted by how this was written. It was very Austen-like, but written from the perspective of a contemporary woman. What does that mean? Well, it was written in in a contemporary style, meaning in the way we talk today – as opposed to the way they spoke back when this story takes place, back in Austen’s day.

While reading, I remember thinking it would be cool if Courtney/Jane got to meet Austen, and then it happened! I had forgotten that Austen hadn’t revealed her identity when publishing her stories, which the encounter reminded me. It was an interesting exchange, but I had hoped it’d be something more positive. LOL

If you’re a Jane Austen fan (like me), then you’ll enjoy this book. I plan to purchase this to read again – when I get into another Jane Austen kick. This will be the perfect way to end my Austen-reading times!

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Loved this review and I’m definitely going to buy this one! I’ve been hesitating but your feedback made me rethink this whole book buying ban… Going to get this one next. Love being caught in a time warp and laughed myself to bits when I read your condom-less seducers… hmmm what happen to the good ole goat / pig sleeves of those times…
