Review: Torment

Torment (Fallen, #2)Torment by Lauren Kate

Summary (from Goodreads): How many lives do you need to live before you find someone worth dying for? In the aftermath of what happened at Sword & Cross, Luce has been hidden away by her cursed angelic boyfriend, Daniel, in a new school filled with Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. Daniel promises she will be safe here, protected from those who would kill her. At the school Luce discovers what the Shadows that have followed her all her life mean – and how to manipulate them to see into her other lives. Yet the more Luce learns about herself, the more she realizes that the past is her only key to unlocking her future…and that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. What if his version of the past isn’t actually the way things happened…what if Luce was really meant to be with someone else?

My Thoughts: I had the pleasure of getting to read this book the day after having finished the previous book in the series (Fallen). I really liked both – and I can’t believe it’ll be NEXT YEAR before the next book is available!

Anyway, I like that this book picked right up where Fallen left off – or pretty close to that point. I like that, a couple of times, we get short glimpses into Daniel’s mind. (I’d actually like to see more of that, but I guess that would take away from his appeal – no more mystery …)

Speaking of Daniel. UGH! I want to smack him and I want to see Luce with him. But, I think I like Miles even better. What a sweetheart! I think Lauren Kate did a great job of showing Luce’s inner turmoil (even referring to what she’s going through as torment) – especially when it comes to the boys in her life. What is right for her? Are she and Daniel really destined for each other? Would she – and maybe even the world as a whole – be better off if they did not stay/end up together? I dunno, but I suspect we’ll find out eventually.

The reappearance of the angelic characters from Fallen was great – even seeing Molly again. I do wonder at this whole “truce” thing and how these angels and demons can work together. I get that they have a common enemy, but still. Good and evil working together? But, I suppose that even nations that are considered enemies might work together when they sense a greater threat to both …

I hope I haven’t spoiled much – if anything – for anyone. If you liked Fallen, then I think it’s safe to say you’ll love Torment. I think I liked Torment a tad bit more than I liked Fallen. It got into the action and the main plot that encompasses the series as a whole much more quickly. I didn’t once have a feeling like I’d like to just get on with it already this time around.

Overall: Excellent book, written quite well. And I must say that I just LOVE the cover (for this and Fallen, I must add). I read this as part of an ARC tour, and will definitely purchase my own copy once it’s available! And you know that what means, don’t you? I will DEFINITELY read this one again!

My Rating: 4.5 stars

I agree with the smacking of Daniel. Sometimes I wanted to give Luce a little push as well.
