Review: Reckless

RecklessReckless by Cornelia Funke

Summary (from Goodreads): For years, Jacob Reckless has been secretly disappearing to another world, a world behind a mirror, a world for which his father abandoned his family. The mirror world is Jacob’s escape from reality. It’s a place for treasure hunts and magnificent quests. A world where witches haunt the forests and giants and dwarfs roam. A world locked in a deadly war.

Jacob’s secret seems safe, until one day his younger brother Will follows him, with disastrous consequence. Faced with a curse that is quickly turning Will to stone, the Reckless brothers are thrust into a race against time to find a cure before Will is lost forever.

My Thoughts: I discovered Cornelia Funke when I stumbled upon the Inkheart series. I LOVED that series and couldn’t read it fast enough. I was hoping for a similar experience with Reckless, but was disappointed. It was good, but not awesome. Let me put it this way: I had less than 100 pages left when I went to bed last night. And I went to bed before midnight. If it was an awesome book, I would’ve stayed up another hour to read the last bit of the book. It wasn’t something I’d consider worthy of sacrificing sleep to finish.

The characters weren’t very rounded. They were pretty one-dimensional. Although, when I consider that this is a YA book, it doesn’t bother me as much. Still, we hardly know Will, Clara, Fox, or pretty much any of the other characters. Jacob is the only one we really get to know, but even then I’m not so sure I get him. I do get his motivation to save his brother. I don’t get him outside that, though.

I was left wondering if this is the beginning of a new series. Does Funke plan a sequel? While I’m not burning to read more, I do hope there’s more coming. There were too many unanswered questions, too many loose ends, too many things left unresolved. I sure hope there’s more of a resolution coming for these characters and this land of dark fairy tales.

My Rating: 3 of 5 stars

Oh, bummer — I hate it when a book with a cool story line doesn't pan out. And it is awfully telling when you have only a short amount of pages left and you didn't finish it last night. Doesn't bode well, 'ey?
