Review: The Dark Divine

The Dark Divine (The Dark Divine, #1)The Dark Divine by Bree Despain

Summary (from Goodreads): Grace Divine—daughter of the local pastor—always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared and her brother Jude came home covered in his own blood.

Now that Daniel’s returned, Grace must choose between her growing attraction to him and her loyalty to her brother.

As Grace gets closer to Daniel, she learns the truth about that mysterious night and how to save the ones she loves, but it might cost her the one thing she cherishes most: her soul.

My Thoughts: Wow! This is one of the books that compel me to sign up for so many books on the tour sites I participate in. When reading the description, I thought it sounded good, like it had potential. I knew this was a popular book, but I didn’t expect to LOVE it! This is why I like to take a chance on books I’m not 100 percent sold on. This is why I sign up for so many books for the ARC tours (and others). If I hadn’t taken a chance, I’d have missed this gem! Tragic! This makes the overbooking myself so worth it!

And more specifically about this book. Let me just say I am in LOVE with Daniel! Love, love, love him! *swoon* And, I am pleased to say, I wasn’t fully able to figure out exactly what he’s dealing with very easily. I knew something was up, but not exactly what until it was fully revealed. Sure, I had a couple of ideas, but not the full knowledge until about the same time Grace had that info.

SPOILER (highlight the white space to read, if you want to read it)
Of course, I could say the same thing about Jude. I started to suspect his issue about midway through (maybe a bit later), but wasn’t entirely sure until a chapter or two before Grace – if even that early.
I cannot tell you how DELIGHTED I am when things like this sneak up on me. Unexpected twists are amazing! I love being able to look back and see the foreshadowing when I am done with the book. Looking back, I can see the very first hint and I can piece it together as I go over the progression of the story in my head. LOVE that, and I WILL be reading this one again. I wanna go back and find all of the clues – the ones I thought I found and other hidden gems that I probably missed!

I wish I had had more time to read this book. I was rushed because I was looking at a looming deadline, for a few books. I needed to get it done, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment. I wanted to keep reading. I didn’t want to stop, but there were times I wished I could slow down a little and just savor it. I guess I’ll make sure I have plenty of time the next time around! ;-) That said, I cannot wait for the sequel. I have no idea when it’s expected to be available, but I sure hope I don’t have to wait more than a matter of months! ;-)

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars
