This is the second book I finished as part of Once Upon a Read-a-Thon.
Summary (from Goodreads): Sailing aboard her father’s trade ship is all seventeen-year-old Camille Rowen has ever wanted. But as a girl of society in 1855 San Francisco, her future is set: marry a man she doesn’t love, or condemn herself and her father to poverty.
On her final voyage before the wedding, the stormy arms of the Tasman Sea claim her father, and a terrible family secret is revealed. A secret intertwined with a fabled map, the mother Camille has long believed dead, and an ancient stone that wields a dangerous—and alluring—magic.
The only person Camille can depend on is Oscar, a handsome young sailor whom she is undeniably drawn to. Torn between trusting her instincts and keeping her promises to her father, Camille embarks on a perilous quest into the Australian wilderness to find the enchanted stone. As she and Oscar elude murderous bushrangers and unravel Camille’s father’s lies, they come closer to making the ultimate decision of who—and what—matters most.
Beautifully written and feverishly paced, Everlasting is an unforgettable journey of passion, secrecy, and adventure
My Thoughts: This was a very enjoyable book. There were lots of twists and turns and lots of unexpected events that made it a fast-paced, action-packed, fantastic adventure. Starting in San Francisco, Calif., travel halfway around the world with Camille as she heads to Australia. Believing that her father intends to take her on a vacation to Sydney, Camille is surprised to find that it’s just not that simple. There’s something strange going on, and all she knows is that no one is being entirely honest with her – about anything. Uncovering the mystery is half the fun.
The other half of the fun is people watching. From Camille’s father and his arch-rival Stuart McGreenery to Ira Beam and members of Camille’s father’s crew, the cast of characters includes a wide variety of personalities. I really loved the characters, and the pairing of Oscar and Camille was superb. I found it slightly surprising that it took Camille so long to figure out how Oscar felt about her, but I guess that’s par for the course in stories like this. I do have to add, though, that there was one thing that troubled me.
I do wonder if there’ll be a sequel. There are hints at what the future will bring and how Camille plans to move forward. There is resolution, but the story just seemed to come to an abrupt end, with very few loose ends tightly tied.
Overall, the journey was fun, remarkable, and fast-paced. I would definitely recommend this.

I'll look for it, then.
Somebody had told me it was realyl depressing, so I had avoided it.
Nah, I didn't get depressing from it at all.
Great review, I'm really excited to read this one soon! I'm on a list to get it from the library.

I highlighted the white text and am really glad I did. That sort of thing would bother me a lot, too. I hope that there was some sort of "atonement" for it later on, just to balance it. I mean, flaws in characters are par for the course, but if a character is someone I'd smack on the back of the head for that flaw if he were my friend, then I'm not going to enjoy the book.
