Review: Sing Me to Sleep

***SPOILER ALERT***DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T LIKE SPOILERS!***

Sing Me to Sleep Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison

Summary: Beth has always been “The Beast”—that’s what everyone at school calls her because of her awkward height, facial scars, and thick glasses. Beth’s only friend is geeky, golden-haired Scott. That is, until she’s selected to be her choir’s soprano soloist, and receives the makeover that will change her life forever.

When Beth’s choir travels to Switzerland, she meets Derek: pale, brooding, totally dreamy. Derek’s untethered passion—for music, and for Beth—leaves her breathless. Because in Derek’s eyes? She’s not The Beast, she’s The Beauty.

When Beth comes home, Scott, her best friend in the world, makes a confession that leaves her completely torn. Should she stand by sweet, steady Scott or follow the dangerous, intense new feelings she has for Derek?

The closer Beth gets to Derek, the further away he seems. Then Beth discovers that Derek’s been hiding a dark secret from her …one that could shatter everything.

My Thoughts: I liked this book from the very start. I think in part because I could relate to Beth. While I’m most definitely not tall and never was tormented as she was, I was definitely an outcast. For me, it was more the junior high years than high school, though. But, I know the pain of being an outsider. I, too, was rejected by my biological father, and suffered as a result. Add to that her music/singing – this could be me! (Except for the perfect pitch and strong voice – I can sing, have been in choirs, but have a soft, airy voice that isn’t perfect.)

The similarities don’t stop there. I, too, lost my first love – in high school, too. Unfortunately, he and I never got any time together. I am jealous of Beth for that. Well, not really, but I would’ve been had I read this back then! ;-) This could be my story, just with different circumstances.

I did not rate this story as I did simply because of those similarities to my own life. While the writing was good, I found the song lyrics strewn throughout the story corny and somewhat annoying. A little bit here and there would’ve been better. There was too much – I felt it disrupted the rhythm of the story. I think the duet over the summer then “Beth’s Song” toward the end would’ve (with maybe one or two others) been enough.

Another slightly (but less so than the lyrics) annoying thing was the interest solely in making out. But, I remember my teenage years, and I know that’s true to life. I think that’s an accurate depiction of life at that stage.

While I don’t usually like being strung along by a story, I didn’t mind not knowing what exactly was going on until it was almost over. There were enough hints and clues that I felt like I was being given something – however small it was.

Overall, it was good. I enjoyed getting to know Beth and seeing her grow from the Ugly Duckling into the beautiful Swan that she became. (If only we all could be so lucky!) I liked that she was believable – and real. She was a great character to experience this story through. (When I think about it, though, I wouldn’t mind seeing Derek’s perspective – or even Scott’s perspective – at some point.)

As I started to say, overall, this was a good book. I was able to overlook the slightly annoying things to get into the story. I would recommend the story. Just make sure you have a box of tissue nearby when you get near the end.

My Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars Note: On Goodreads it’s actually 4 stars, because half stars aren’t possible on there.
