The Emerald Talisman by Brenda Pandos
Summary: To be normal, sixteen-year-old Julia Parker would shed her empathic gift in a second. Life has been difficult since her mother’s mysterious disappearance ten years earlier – an event she witnessed, but can’t remember. Julia’s situation becomes more complicated after a near death experience from a blood thirsty stalker. As high school students go missing it is clear there is a connection to her own experience–past and present. Someone has to stop the madness and a chance encounter with a creepy psychic foretells that only Julia is the key to stopping the madness, but it may require the life of the one she loves.
My Thoughts: I’m kinda at a loss of what to say about this book. It’s not because this was a bad book. It’s not because I didn’t like it – I did like it. It’s not because it wasn’t interesting or anything. Perhaps I’m just not in a writing state-of-mind right now … so, I’ll just try to lay out my thoughts.
At first I wasn’t too into the book. I kept thinking it was “OK” – not good, definitely not great, maybe 2.5 or 3 stars. I felt it was kinda slow to start. The events of the first half of the book were interesting, but not all that attention-grabbing. Despite that, I do think the events and information shared were necessary. I think it is important to understand what transpired at those times, and I think they were important parts that set the groundwork for the rest of the book.
About halfway through, perhaps a little earlier than that, I was sucked in. I just wanted to read and read and read. I couldn’t find out what was coming fast enough. And by the end, I was satisfied with how everything played out. Definitely. I am sure hoping a sequel is coming soon, as I want to see the next chapter in Julia and Nicholas’ journey together!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
